Gearbox Software

Homeworld® Remastered Collection is a 2015 massive compilation and top-to-bottom graphical overhaul of the first two games in the legendary 3D space RTS franchise. Developed and published by Gearbox Software (with heavy assistance from Blackbird Interactive, a studio founded by the original Relic Entertainment creators), this collection is widely considered one of the most respectful, painstakingly crafted remasters in PC gaming history.
The existence of this collection is a triumph of game preservation. When publisher THQ famously went bankrupt in 2013, the Homeworld IP was put up for auction. Fearing the legendary franchise would be bought by a holding company and buried forever, Brian Fargo (of inXile) and Blackbird Interactive attempted to crowd-fund a bid. However, Gearbox Software swooped in and bought the IP outright. Instead of just sitting on it, Gearbox immediately poured massive resources into fully modernizing the 1999 and 2003 classics, ensuring they would survive for future generations.
The Modernization Overhaul
Rather than just bumping up the resolution of the old games, Gearbox essentially rebuilt the original 1999 Homeworld from the ground up, physically porting it into a heavily upgraded version of the Homeworld 2 engine.
Key modernizations and upgrades include:
- Breathtaking 4K Visuals: The 3D models were completely rebuilt with dramatically higher polygon counts, while remaining strictly faithful to the original 90s concept art. The game features modernized lighting, dynamic shadows, and absolutely stunning deep-space nebulas that make the cosmos feel vast and terrifying.
- The Audio Restoration: This was arguably the most impressive feat of the remaster. Gearbox tracked down the original uncompressed audio source tapes. They brought back original composer Paul Ruskay to completely remaster the iconic, ambient soundtrack. Furthermore, they tracked down the original voice actors—including Heidi Ernest (the voice of Fleet Command) and Michael Sunczyk (Fleet Intelligence)—to completely re-record their lines in crystal-clear high fidelity.
- Unified UI: The highly complex, slightly clunky user interface of the 1999 original was replaced. Both games in the collection now share a unified, streamlined, and scalable UI based on the smoother Homeworld 2 design.
The Complete Package
The collection didn’t just force players into the new engines; it was designed as the ultimate archival package for the franchise.
- The Remastered Campaigns: You get the complete, story-driven campaigns of Homeworld and Homeworld 2, playable with the modernized graphics, unified UI, and remastered audio.
- The “Classic” Versions: For hardcore purists, the collection also natively includes the completely untouched, original 1999 and 2003 versions of the games. Gearbox simply patched them to run flawlessly on modern Windows operating systems without the need for emulators or complex fan-patches.
- Cross-Game Multiplayer: Because Homeworld 1 was ported into the Homeworld 2 engine, Gearbox did something incredible: they merged the multiplayer. For the first time ever, players could pit the blocky, utilitarian Kushan armada from 1999 directly against the sleek, missile-heavy Vaygr swarms from 2003 in massive, cross-era space battles.
Development and Legacy (The 2.0 Patch)
Released in February 2015, the Remastered Collection was a massive commercial success and revitalized the dead franchise. However, it launched with a highly controversial flaw. Because Homeworld 1 was running in the Homeworld 2 engine, it lost some of its defining mechanics. Formations didn’t work correctly (ships would break formation the second they entered combat), and the true physical ballistics simulation of 1999 was replaced by a rigid “chance-to-hit” RNG system.
In a massive show of good faith, Gearbox spent over a year working directly with the modding community to rewrite the engine’s core code. In 2016, they released the legendary 2.0 Patch. This massive update completely fixed the formation logic, restored true physical ballistics to the game, and massively rebalanced the cross-game multiplayer.
Today, thanks to that patch and full Steam Workshop integration, the Homeworld Remastered Collection stands as the undisputed, definitive way to experience one of PC gaming’s greatest sci-fi epics.
