Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is a 2016 real-time strategy (RTS) game developed by Blackbird Interactive and published by Gearbox Software. Taking a massive, highly ambitious detour from the deep-space combat the franchise is famous for, Deserts of Kharak serves as a direct prequel to the 1999 original, bringing the sweeping, melancholic sci-fi action down to the shifting sand dunes of a dying planet.

The narrative is set 106 years before the events of the first Homeworld. The desert planet of Kharak is rapidly deteriorating, and the habitable zones are shrinking. However, a satellite detects a massive “Primary Anomaly” buried deep within the hostile, equatorial Great Banded Desert. You play as Rachel S’jet (the ancestor of Karan S’jet, the future Fleet Command), the chief science officer of the secular Coalition of the Northern Kiithid. To cross the treacherous dunes and investigate the anomaly, the Coalition deploys the Kapisi—a colossal, heavily armed land carrier. However, the deep desert is controlled by the Gaalsien, a fanatical religious sect who believe that disturbing the anomaly and looking toward the stars will bring the wrath of their god, Sajuuk, down upon the planet.

Gameplay and Mechanical Overhauls

Translating a strictly 3D, zero-gravity space RTS into a 2D, ground-based game seemed like a daunting task, but Blackbird Interactive (a studio founded by the original developers of Homeworld) managed to perfectly preserve the heavy, methodical “fleet combat” feel of the franchise on land.

Key gameplay mechanics and innovations include:

  • Terrain is the New Z-Axis: Because there is no outer space, the game utilizes highly dynamic, 3D sand dunes to recreate the tactical depth of the original games. Elevation is everything. Vehicles positioned on the crest of a sand dune deal significantly more damage, have vastly improved accuracy, and possess a massive line-of-sight advantage over units trapped in the valleys below.
  • The Land Carrier: The Kapisi acts as your mobile Mothership. It produces units, researches tech, and serves as your resource drop-off. Crucially, as you gather artifacts, you can dynamically route power to the carrier’s distinct sub-systems. In a pinch, you can shunt all power from the repair bays directly into the artillery cannons and armor plating, turning the carrier itself into a terrifying, frontline dreadnought.
  • Persistent Fleet and Veterancy: Just like the space-bound games, your surviving units jump with you from mission to mission. However, Deserts of Kharak heavily emphasizes unit veterancy. If you keep a railgun squad alive across multiple missions, they will rank up, gaining permanent health and damage buffs that make them invaluable assets.
  • Air Support: While it is a ground-based game, you can build Strike Fighters and Tactical Bombers on the flight deck of the Kapisi. These jets launch, deliver devastating, surgical payloads across the map, and immediately return to the carrier to rearm, mimicking the classic carrier-strike gameplay of the space titles.

The Factions

The campaign focuses on a brutal, ideological war of attrition between two deeply asymmetrical forces:

  • The Coalition: The pragmatic, survival-focused scientists of the North. Because they rely on traditional mechanics, their military is heavily industrial, utilizing massive, multi-treaded Armored Assault Vehicles (AAVs) and slow-moving, heavily armored wheeled Cruisers.
  • The Gaalsien: The fanatical, desert-dwelling zealots. Having lived in the deep dunes for centuries, their technology is vastly different. The Gaalsien entirely eschew wheels and treads; every single one of their vehicles—including their colossal flagship carrier, the Hand of Sajuuk—utilizes advanced hover technology. This makes them incredibly fast, highly agile, and masters of hit-and-run flanking tactics.
  • (Note: Post-launch multiplayer DLC added two more minor factions—the aggressive, salvaging Khaaneph and the militaristic, EMP-wielding Soban).

Development and Legacy

The origin of Deserts of Kharak is one of the most heartwarming stories in game development. Originally, Blackbird Interactive did not have the rights to the Homeworld IP (which was owned by THQ). They began developing the game as a “spiritual successor” titled Hardware: Shipbreakers. When THQ went bankrupt in 2013, Gearbox Software bought the Homeworld rights at auction. Rather than shutting down Blackbird’s project, Gearbox actually approached them, handed them the official IP, and funded the game, allowing it to officially become a Homeworld prequel.

Released in January 2016, the game was a massive critical success. Fans were blown away by how faithfully it captured the atmosphere of the original games. This was heavily aided by the return of original composer Paul Ruskay, who delivered a breathtaking, Middle Eastern-inspired ambient soundtrack that perfectly captured the scale of the endless desert.

The success of Deserts of Kharak revitalized the franchise, proving that the Homeworld formula could thrive in new environments and directly paving the way for Blackbird Interactive to eventually develop the mainline, space-faring sequel, Homeworld 3, which released in 2024.

Key Features:

  • The Land Leviathans — Command massive, mobile base carriers across the desert, dynamically routing power to weapons and armor in the heat of battle.
  • Topographical Warfare — Master the dunes by utilizing line-of-sight and securing the high ground to gain massive offensive and defensive bonuses.
  • The Prequel Narrative — Uncover the origins of the Hiigaran exiles, following Rachel S’jet on a desperate mission to save her dying planet.
  • Combined Arms — Deploy a deeply tactical mix of light buggies, heavy railguns, and flight-deck air strikes to break enemy lines.
  • The Original Soundscape — Immerse yourself in the world of Kharak with a masterful, award-winning ambient soundtrack composed by franchise veteran Paul Ruskay.
