GTA 6 Gates Story Missions Behind a Minimum Cash Requirement
GTA 6 will block players from continuing its story unless protagonists Jason and Lucia have enough money in the bank, according to new details that surfaced after a hands-on session at Rockstar Games, making the title’s deeply expanded robbery system far more than a side activity.
Pay to Play the Story
YouTuber TGG attended a viewing of GTA 6 gameplay at Rockstar and shared details, later highlighted by GamesRadar, confirming that at certain points in the campaign, a minimum cash threshold must be met before the next story mission unlocks. The specific narrative reasons behind each gate have not been disclosed, but the mechanic means players cannot simply ignore money-making activities and sprint through the plot. Side jobs, robberies, and other income sources are woven directly into the pacing of the game rather than sitting off to the side as optional distractions.
Robbery Gets a Complete Overhaul
The robbery system in GTA 6 is a significant step beyond what GTA 5 offered. According to details reported by GamesRadar, every store in the game can be robbed, and each robbery plays out differently depending on the type of establishment. Variables like security camera placement and the presence of hostages factor into how a heist unfolds. Much of the robbery footage shown during the extended gameplay reveal was open-world in nature rather than scripted mission sequences, suggesting these moments happen organically across Leonida. Bank robberies are also possible in the open world, adding another layer to the financial ecosystem players will need to navigate.
Players who want to earn money without holding up stores have at least one alternative. Racing features prominently in the game, as seen during the Netflix gameplay premiere, giving players a legal-adjacent route to building their bankroll.
Rockstar Under Pressure to Deliver
The stakes surrounding GTA 6 are enormous. Rockstar has openly acknowledged the weight of expectations, with studio representatives telling GameSpot that “we are nervous” about the pressure bearing down on the project. That sentiment is shared across the wider industry. CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski told GamesRadar he is “100% sure” GTA 6 is being built with quality as the guiding principle rather than cost-cutting, drawing a parallel to how CD Projekt Red approaches The Witcher 4.
On the design side, early analysis suggests Rockstar is being deliberate rather than showy. As GamesRadar noted after reviewing footage, each new system shown so far adds something functional to gameplay rather than existing purely for visual spectacle. The cash-gated mission structure appears to be another example of that philosophy in action, turning money from an abstract resource into an active driver of how players engage with the world.
