You Are Empty: Absolute Edition Is Out Now, 20 Years After the Original
You Are Empty, the cult Ukrainian shooter set in an alternate-history 1950s Soviet Kyiv, has returned as You Are Empty: Absolute Edition. It launched on Steam today, October 27, 2026, exactly 20 years after the original reached Russian shelves on October 27, 2006. The remaster costs $7.99 and runs on Windows. ZOOM Platform led the revival with Jordan Freeman Group, and it adds modern resolutions, controller support, achievements and much faster loading. The store page lists no new content.
What the Absolute Edition changes
The Steam page describes a technical overhaul of the 2006 game, with its intent preserved. The changes include:
- Display: Modern and widescreen resolutions without a stretched HUD, menus, weapons or videos. Adjustable FOV, an optional FPS limiter, up to 8x MSAA, 16x anisotropic filtering, fixed camera jitter, a better windowed mode and more consistent frametimes.
- Performance and stability: Fixes for many rendering bugs and crashes, and loading times about 800% faster. Rendering is meant to look the same on Nvidia, AMD and Intel GPUs. The game no longer needs externally installed prerequisites or deprecated Windows APIs.
- Controls: Controller support for modern and legacy pads, with three presets via SDL.
- Quality of life: Achievements, a HUD toggle hotkey, a HUD that fades when you are not shooting, and reduced camera bobbing.
- Sprinting: Optional sprint, added after years of criticism of the slow walking speed. The developers warn that pacing may feel off in some areas with sprint enabled.
The interface is in English, Russian, Ukrainian, Czech and Polish, with full voice-over in English, Russian, Czech and Polish. Steam features include achievements, cloud saves, trading cards and Family Sharing. The Original Soundtrack is a separate $4.99 add-on, and a Complete bundle with the soundtrack costs $9.99.
Linux and Steam Deck
The game officially supports Windows only. A ZOOM Platform representative told GamingOnLinux that “the game had some specific issues running within Proton and a ton of OpenGL AMD bugs we fixed,” and that it now runs well under Wine.
What the game is
You Are Empty imagines a 1950s Soviet Union that has become a world leader in science and technology. A massive antenna tower was meant to broadcast a psychic signal that would turn the population into superhumans. Instead it killed most people or turned them into insane mutants. The player is a mid-ranking officer who wakes in a ruined hospital and fights toward the source of the disaster.
Levels range from collective farms and the Metro to an opera house, city rooftops and secret laboratories. The arsenal combines real period weapons, including the Mauser C96, the PPSh submachine gun, the Mosin rifle and a double-barrel shotgun, with experimental retrofuturistic weapons. Enemies are built from Soviet propaganda archetypes: workers, firefighters, welders with propellers, armed elderly peasants and Red Army soldiers.
The original release and its reputation
Ukrainian studios Mandel ArtPlains and Digital Spray Studios built the game on their DS2 engine. A demo won Best Game Without a Publisher at the Russian Game Developers Conference in 2003. 1C Company published the game in Russia on October 27, 2006, and it reached Poland on April 13, 2007. Atari released the English version with voice acting in North America on October 16, 2007.
Western critics were harsh. The game holds a 34/100 average on Metacritic from 14 reviews and 40% on GameRankings from 15. GameSpot’s Brett Todd gave it 1.5/10 and called it a “painful exercise in shooter stupidity.” Reviewers criticized the slow movement, repetitive level structure and poor translation. They praised the atmosphere: GameSpot called some of the music effectively creepy, and GamingNexus called the game “much more than the latest Half-Life clone.”
The game kept a following anyway. MyAbandonware lists it with a 4.58 out of 5 user rating from 124 votes. The site now notes that the game “is no longer abandonware” and will not put it back online.
How the revival came together
ZOOM Platform announced the Absolute Edition on August 18, 2026, with a trailer, timed for the 20th anniversary. Steam credits the developers as Digital Spray Studios, Mandel ArtPlains, Jordan Freeman Group and ZOOM Platform Media, with Strategy First and BillionTech as publishers. Time Extension reported that the game would also come to ZOOM Platform and the Epic Games Store.
