Stephen Root Confirmed as GTA 6 Cast Member

The GTA 6 cast mystery has its first confirmed name: Stephen Root, the prolific actor and voice talent best known for King of the Hill and the HBO series Barry, has publicly acknowledged his role in Rockstar Games’ long-awaited crime epic, making him the first performer officially linked to the project.

Root Confirms His Involvement

Speaking to AP News, Root was asked directly about fan speculation surrounding his appearance in GTA 6 and gave a straightforward answer: “Yeah, you’re gonna see me in that.” According to Eurogamer, internet sleuths had been circling this theory ever since the game’s first trailer dropped, with many recognizing Root’s distinctive voice in the footage. Root himself acknowledged the leak was essentially inevitable: “I think, from the first roll out of GTA that they were doing maybe almost a year ago, they had my character in there and there were too many people who knew me from King of the Hill and my voice. So, I think that secret got divulged then.”

Who Is He Playing?

Root did not name the character outright, but fan speculation has long pointed to a figure named Brian Heder. Rockstar’s own website describes Brian as a “classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling” who is “still moving product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori.” The game’s extended look even features protagonists Lucia and Jason heading out for drinks with Brian and Lori, giving fans a clearer look at the character alongside the voice they believe belongs to Root.

A Career Built on Memorable Voices

Root brings serious credentials to the role. Beyond his live-action work in the Oscar-winning horror film Get Out and the Emmy-winning Barry, his voice acting resume spans King of the Hill, Rick and Morty, and even a reprisal of his bubble-loving fish character from the Finding Nemo video game. His enthusiasm for GTA 6 came through clearly in comments reported by Eurogamer: “I am so happy to be involved with it. It’s an amazing thing to look at.”

What Else We Know About GTA 6

Root also offered a release detail, saying “It’s coming out November 19th, is the latest I know of.” On the technical side, Rockstar has confirmed the game is currently running at 30 FPS, with no firm commitment yet on a 60 FPS option. The studio has also gone on record stating GTA 6 will not include generative AI or microtransactions at launch. With the release window drawing closer, more casting announcements are likely to follow.
