Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Winter Assault is the first official expansion to the 2004 RTS classic, released in 2005 by Relic Entertainment. While the original game set the stage for squad-based combat in the 41st Millennium, Winter Assault significantly raised the stakes by introducing a new playable faction—the Imperial Guard—and a dual-narrative campaign that explored the desperate struggle for a legendary war machine.
Winter Assault is a core component of the recently released Dawn of War: Definitive Edition (2025). In this modernized format, the expansion benefits from 4K texture upscaling, 64-bit stability, and an improved camera, making the frost-covered battlefields of Lorn V more atmospheric and brutal than ever before.
The Premise: The Race for the Titan
The narrative is set on the ice-world of Lorn V, a desolate planet housing a “holy grail” of imperial technology: a lost Titan Dominatus. This gargantuan, god-like war machine has drawn the attention of every major power in the sector. The campaign is uniquely structured into two distinct paths, allowing players to see the conflict from the perspective of both the “Order” and “Disorder” factions:
- The Campaign of Order: Follows the Imperial Guard (412th Cadian Regiment) and the Eldar (Ulthwé Craftworld). While both seek the Titan, their alliance is one of pure convenience; the Guard want to reclaim a relic of their Emperor, while the Eldar seek to prevent the awakening of their ancient enemy, the Necrons.
- The Campaign of Disorder: Follows the Orks and Chaos Space Marines. Driven by a thirst for plunder and dark glory, these factions spend as much time fighting each other as they do the forces of Order. The Ork Warboss Gorgutz and the Chaos Lord Crull are locked in a personal rivalry that defines the chaotic nature of their alliance.
Gameplay: The Hammer of the Emperor
The headline feature of Winter Assault was the introduction of the Imperial Guard, which offered a playstyle completely different from the elite Space Marines:
- Mass Infantry & Morale: The Guard rely on the “meat grinder” approach. Their basic infantry squads are weak and cheap, but they can be reinforced with specialized leaders (Commissars and Priests) to execute cowards and keep morale high.
- The Bunker & Tunnel System: Unlike other factions, Guard buildings are interconnected. Infantry can enter one structure and instantly travel through a tunnel network to emerge from another, allowing for rapid defensive redeployments across the map.
- Mechanized Might: To compensate for their fragile infantry, the Guard possess the most powerful armored units in the game, culminating in the Baneblade—a super-heavy tank that acts as a mobile fortress, capable of obliterating entire armies single-handedly.
- Hero Units: The expansion expanded the role of Heroes, introducing powerful casters like the Eldar Farseer and brutal melee powerhouses like the Ork Warboss, whose presence on the field provides essential buffs to their respective squads.
Development and Legacy
Winter Assault was praised for diversifying the Dawn of War ecosystem. It moved the game away from being a “Space Marine simulator” and proved that Relic’s engine could handle asymmetrical warfare on a grand scale. The expansion also famously teased the arrival of the Necrons, setting the stage for the legendary Dark Crusade.
Winter Assault missions are often cited by the community as having some of the most creative “hold the line” objectives in the series. The inclusion of the Necrons as a non-playable endgame threat in the campaign provided a genuine sense of horror and scale that fans still discuss today.
