Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Chaos Rising is the standalone expansion to the tactical RTS hit Dawn of War II, continuing the saga of the Blood Ravens Chapter. Developed by Relic Entertainment, it plunges players into a world of betrayal and dark temptation, where the line between heroism and heresy is razor-thin. Set on the long-lost ice planet of Aurelia, the expansion shifts from the hive worlds and jungles of the first game to a desolate, frozen landscape haunted by the emergence of the Black Legion.

The Corruption of the Blood Ravens

The defining feature of Chaos Rising is the Corruption and Purity system. As the Blood Ravens face the insidious influence of the Warp, players must make difficult choices that affect their squads’ souls. Every mission presents moral dilemmas: do you hold onto your purity for traditional bonuses, or do you embrace the forbidden power of Chaos to gain devastating new abilities?

Corruption isn’t just a narrative choice; it fundamentally alters gameplay. High corruption levels grant squads dark, aggressive traits but lock off holy relics and lead to darker endings. Conversely, maintaining purity requires strict adherence to the Space Marine code, rewarding the player with powerful defensive buffs and the most “blessed” wargear.

Handcrafted Storytelling

Departing from the semi-random skirmishes of the original campaign, Chaos Rising features 15 handcrafted missions with a deep focus on narrative and character development. The story picks up shortly after the defeat of the Tyranid Hive Fleet, following the Force Commander and his veteran squads as they investigate a distress signal from a planet that has been trapped in a Warp storm for centuries.

The expansion also introduces Jonah Orion, a powerful Librarian hero who brings devastating psychic abilities to the field, allowing for a more versatile team composition as you battle the heretical forces of Araghast the Pillager.

Factions and The Last Stand

Chaos Rising brings the iconic Chaos Space Marines to the multiplayer arena, complete with their own unique units like the Bloodcrushers and Plague Marines. This faction focuses on dark worship and high-risk, high-reward tactical play.

The popular Last Stand mode is also expanded with two new heroes:

  • The Chaos Sorcerer: A master of Warp manipulation who can summon doppelgangers of enemy units and rain down destructive spells.
  • The Tyranid Hive Tyrant: A massive biological juggernaut that uses synapse links to control waves of lesser Tyranid minions while shrugging off damage that would crush a lesser warrior.

Key Features

  • Corruption Mechanic — Navigate the moral grey areas of the 41st Millennium; your actions directly determine the abilities, appearance, and fate of your squads.
  • The Chaos Faction — Play as the Chaos Space Marines in multiplayer, utilizing dark gods’ favors and terrifying Warp technology.
  • Handcrafted Campaign — Experience 15 story-driven missions that bridge the gap between Dawn of War II and Retribution.
  • New Hero: The Librarian — Deploy Jonah Orion to unleash psychic storms and provide critical support to your frontline troops.
  • Expanded Last Stand — Battle through waves of enemies as the Chaos Sorcerer or the Hive Tyrant in the fan-favorite cooperative survival mode.
  • Save Import — Carry your veteran squads and their hard-earned wargear over from the original Dawn of War II to continue your legend.

Summary

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II – Chaos Rising is an essential expansion that deepens the tactical and emotional stakes of the series. By introducing the risk of corruption and the terrifying presence of the Black Legion, it captures the “grimdark” essence of the 40K universe better than almost any other strategy title. It is a story of brotherhood, sacrifice, and the eternal struggle against the darkness within.
