Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade is the 2006 standalone expansion to the original Dawn of War, and to many fans, it remains the absolute high-water mark of the entire franchise. Developed by Relic Entertainment, it moved away from the linear stories of the previous entries to introduce a massive, non-linear planetary conquest mode that transformed the game into a “Risk-style” war for global dominance.

Dark Crusade is celebrated as the soul of the Dawn of War: Definitive Edition (2025). With the recent 64-bit engine update, the legendary “Stronghold” missions—which used to chug on older hardware—now run with thousands of units on screen at a buttery-smooth 144FPS, allowing the Necron silver tide and Tau firing lines to be rendered in stunning 4K detail.

Overview: The Battle for Kronus

The war moves to the planet Kronus, a world with a dark secret. Seven different factions have arrived, each with a legitimate (or at least violent) claim to the planet. Unlike previous games, there is no “main” protagonist. You choose one of the seven factions and attempt to systematically wipe the other six off the map.

The narrative is told through the perspective of your chosen Commander as they conquer territories, build a specialized “Honor Guard,” and eventually lay siege to the enemy’s massive, uniquely designed home Strongholds.

The New Factions

Dark Crusade introduced two of the most popular and mechanically unique factions in 40K history:

  • The Tau Empire: A technologically advanced race that believes in the “Greater Good.” They are the masters of long-range warfare, utilizing high-tech Railguns and Missile Pods. However, they are fragile in melee, requiring them to rely on their alien allies, the Kroot, to act as a “meat shield” while their Crisis Suits jump-jet across the battlefield.
  • The Necrons: An undying legion of robotic warriors rising from ancient tombs beneath the planet’s surface. They are the most unique faction in the game; they do not use Requisition. Their only resource is Power, and their units are free to build but take a significant amount of time to construct. They are slow and inexorable, culminating in the terrifying Monolith—a floating fortress that acts as their primary production building and ultimate weapon.

Gameplay: Non-Linear Conquest

The defining feature of Dark Crusade is the Metamap. The planet Kronus is divided into 25 territories, each providing unique bonuses (such as increased resource flow, the ability to attack twice per turn, or planetary movement).

  • Honor Guard: As you conquer territories, you earn the ability to recruit “Honor Guard” units. These are elite, persistent versions of standard units that start every mission with you, allowing you to bypass the early-game “build-up” phase in later stages of the war.
  • Commander Wargear: Winning battles grants your Commander “Wargear” points. You can customize your leader with new armor, weapons, and abilities (like teleportation or cloaking), visually transforming them from a standard unit into a legendary demigod of the battlefield.
  • Stronghold Missions: To eliminate a faction, you must attack their home base. These are massive, scripted RTS missions that act as “boss fights,” featuring unique mechanics and colossal set-pieces that test everything you’ve learned during the campaign.

Legacy

Dark Crusade is the foundation for the most ambitious mods in strategy gaming. Because the 2025 Definitive Edition solved the “Memory Allocation” issues of the old 32-bit engine, massive projects like Ultimate Apocalypse and Unification have reached their final, stable forms. These mods add dozens of new factions (like the Tyranids and Chaos Daemons) and Titans, making Dark Crusade the “infinite” 40K simulator.

It is widely considered the best expansion Relic ever produced, perfectly balancing faction asymmetry with a campaign structure that offers near-infinite replayability.
