Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Soulstorm is the third and final standalone expansion to the genre-defining real-time strategy series. Developed by Iron Lore Entertainment and Relic Entertainment, it serves as the ultimate conclusion to the first Dawn of War era. Expanding the conflict to an unprecedented scale, it features the largest roster in the series’ history and introduces the final pieces of the 41st Millennium’s tactical puzzle.

The Interplanetary Campaign

Moving beyond single planets, Soulstorm takes the non-linear conquest pioneered in Dark Crusade and expands it to the entire Kaurava system. This massive campaign spans four planets and three moons, creating a theater of war where players must fight for total system-wide dominance.

Each territory on the strategic map provides unique bonuses, from increased resource production to specialized tactical abilities. For the first time, players can command a total of nine distinct factions, each with its own home stronghold that must be conquered through epic, multi-stage siege missions.

The New Factions

Soulstorm introduces two of the most requested armies from the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop universe, each bringing entirely new mechanics to the battlefield:

  • The Sisters of Battle (Adepta Sororitas): The military arm of the Ecclesiarchy, these holy warriors utilize a unique “Faith” resource. Generated through holy icons and the presence of faithful squads, Faith allows the Sisters to manifest divine interventions—powerful abilities that can heal troops, strike enemies with holy fire, or grant temporary invulnerability.
  • The Dark Eldar: Cruel and sadistic raiders from the city of Commorragh, the Dark Eldar utilize a “Soul Essence” resource. As units die on the battlefield, the Dark Eldar harvest their souls to fuel devastating dark powers, such as corrosive mists and psychological terror tactics. They favor extreme speed and “glass cannon” units, striking hard and vanishing before the enemy can retaliate.

Gameplay Innovations: Taking to the Skies

The most significant mechanical addition in Soulstorm is the introduction of Air Units. Every faction in the game received a specialized aircraft, such as the Space Marine Tempest or the Ork Fighta-Bomma. These units can bypass terrain obstacles, scout deep into enemy territory, and harass ground forces, adding a vertical layer of strategy to the series’ classic squad-based combat.

The game also refined the veteran system, allowing players to carry over their elite Honor Guard and Commander wargear throughout the planetary conquest, making the growth of your army feel persistent and rewarding across the entire system.

Key Features

  • Nine Playable Factions — The complete Dawn of War collection in one game: Space Marines, Chaos, Orks, Eldar, Imperial Guard, Necrons, Tau Empire, and the newly added Sisters of Battle and Dark Eldar.
  • Interplanetary Conquest — Wage war across a massive solar system featuring four planets and three moons in a non-linear “Risk-style” campaign.
  • Tactical Air Combat — Deploy aircraft for every faction to dominate the skies and rain destruction from above.
  • Faith and Souls — Master two unique resource mechanics that offer powerful, tide-turning abilities mid-combat.
  • Massive Multiplayer — Test your strategies in intense skirmishes with the largest variety of unit matchups available in the franchise.

Summary

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Soulstorm is the definitive capstone to a legendary series. By combining the deep, squad-based tactics of the original with an expanded interplanetary scope and a massive faction roster, it offers a complete and visceral window into the grimdark future. Whether you are leading a holy crusade with the Sisters of Battle or harvesting souls with the Dark Eldar, Soulstorm delivers the scale and intensity that fans of the franchise demand.

Release Platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows (PC) — Available via Steam and GOG.
