Where to buy
SpellForce 3: Fallen God is the 2020 standalone expansion to the critically acclaimed RTS/RPG hybrid SpellForce 3. Developed by Grimlore Games and published by THQ Nordic, this second major expansion took a massive, incredibly bold narrative risk. Instead of focusing on traditional high-fantasy heroes like noble humans or tragic elves, Fallen God put players entirely in the shoes of the franchise’s traditional cannon fodder: a tribe of desperate, misunderstood Trolls.
The narrative shifts away from the political machinations of the human kingdoms and transports players to the harsh, uncharted continent of Urgath. You take command of the Moonkin, a nomadic tribe of Trolls facing total extinction. Hunted mercilessly by elven poachers for their valuable tusks and ravaged by a mysterious, rotting disease, the tribe is hanging by a thread. As the young chieftain Akrog, you are approached by a mysterious stranger who offers a desperate path to salvation: the Moonkin must journey across the deadly continent to resurrect a slumbering, fallen god.
Gameplay
Fallen God utilizes the highly polished, vastly improved engine introduced in the Soul Harvest expansion, but it completely upends how the RTS mechanics are played by introducing the wildly unique Troll faction.
Key gameplay mechanics and innovations include:
- Nomadic Base-Building: The Trolls do not build permanent, sprawling stone castles. Their entire RTS economy is nomadic. If a sector runs out of resources, or if an enemy army is approaching, players can physically “pack up” their central camp onto massive beasts of burden and migrate to a completely different sector of the map to establish a new foothold.
- The Scrap Economy: The Trolls rely on salvaging and repurposing the weapons and armor of their defeated enemies. This introduces a robust crafting system where players can take generic “Scrap” gathered on the map and use it to forge highly specialized, customized weapons and armor for their Troll heroes.
- A Pre-Defined Hero Party: Rather than creating a generic Avatar, the RPG mechanics are heavily focused on Akrog and his three closest companions: Noag, Grungar, and Zazka. Each Troll has a distinct personality, combat specialty, and deeply customizable skill tree. How you build them determines whether they act as heavily armored tanks, shamans, or brutal melee fighters.
- Hex-Based Unit Roster: The Troll army is terrifyingly brutal. They field massive, club-wielding smashers, iron-clad Brutes, and goblin-tossing catapults. Their units are fewer in number than the humans or elves, but each individual Troll boasts a massive health pool and devastating area-of-effect damage.
Development and Legacy
Released in November 2020, Fallen God was universally praised as a masterclass in fantasy storytelling. Reviewers were blown away by how Grimlore Games managed to take a race of traditionally “dumb monsters” and craft an incredibly sympathetic, emotionally devastating 15-to-20-hour campaign. The dialogue is remarkably poignant, exploring themes of survival, faith, and the horrors of colonialism from the perspective of the oppressed.
Furthermore, the campaign introduced branching choices that actually mattered. The decisions you make as Akrog throughout the journey dictate the ultimate fate of the Moonkin tribe, leading to several vastly different endings that heavily increase the game’s replayability.
Just like Soul Harvest, Fallen God was a standalone release, allowing players to experience this specific story without needing the base game. Ultimately, the Troll faction and the mechanical refinements of this expansion were seamlessly integrated into the unified SpellForce 3 Reforced edition in late 2021, cementing the Trolls as a permanent, highly beloved fixture in the game’s competitive multiplayer roster.
