SpellForce 2: Demons of the Past is a 2014 standalone expansion and the absolute final chapter of the SpellForce 2 saga. Developed by Mind Over Matter Studios and published by Nordic Games (now THQ Nordic), this release was designed specifically to clean up the messy cliffhanger left behind by 2012’s highly criticized Faith in Destiny and give the aging 2006 game engine the grand send-off it deserved.

The narrative picks up exactly where the previous expansion abruptly ended. The apocalyptic, demonic entity known as Zazhut has been fully freed from his magical prison. His armies of “The Nameless” are rapidly conquering the remaining, isolated islands of Eo. Playing once again as a Shaikan hero, you must unite the fractured races of the world, uncover ancient draconic secrets, and forge a weapon capable of destroying a literal god before Zazhut can wipe out all of existence.

Gameplay

While Demons of the Past ran on the exact same proprietary 2006 engine as the original Shadow Wars, Mind Over Matter Studios put significantly more effort into the level design, scripting, and content volume than the previous developers.

Key gameplay mechanics and additions include:

  • A Proper Campaign: Unlike the painfully short 12-hour campaign of Faith in Destiny, this expansion delivered a massive, sprawling 25+ hour single-player campaign, featuring much larger maps, deeper side quests, and massive siege battles that rivaled the scale of the original games.
  • All Factions Playable: For multiplayer and skirmish modes, players had access to the complete, unified roster of all five SpellForce 2 factions: The Realm, The Clans, The Pact, The Shaikan, and The Nameless.
  • Survival Mode: A brand-new multiplayer and single-player mode was introduced. “Survival” tasked players (either alone or cooperatively) with holding a central base against increasingly difficult, endless waves of Nameless enemies, heavily relying on rapid base-building and choke-point defense.
  • Freeplay Returns: The beloved sandbox mode made a triumphant return, allowing players to create an Avatar and grind for loot, levels, and gear across standalone maps without being tied to the story campaign.

Development and Legacy

Released in January 2014, Demons of the Past was widely viewed by the community as an “apology letter” from Nordic Games. After the disastrous launch of Faith in Destiny by Trine Games, Nordic handed the reins to Mind Over Matter Studios, who actively listened to fan feedback. They vastly improved the voice acting, fixed the game-breaking bugs, and delivered a satisfying, epic conclusion to the story of the Shaikan.

However, the game still faced an uphill battle with critics. Releasing in 2014, the SpellForce 2 engine was officially eight years old. The low-resolution textures, clunky pathfinding, and rigid animations felt incredibly dated compared to modern strategy games of the era like StarCraft II or Company of Heroes 2.

Despite the technical age of the engine, Demons of the Past succeeded in its primary goal: it respectfully closed the book on the classic era of the franchise. By officially wrapping up the SpellForce 2 storyline, it cleared the slate, allowing THQ Nordic to begin development on a completely new engine and a fresh narrative, which would eventually become the gorgeous, critically acclaimed prequel, SpellForce 3, in 2017.

Key Features:

  • The Grand Finale — Experience the epic, 25+ hour conclusion to the SpellForce 2 storyline, battling the dark god Zazhut to save the shattered world of Eo.
  • Survival of the Fittest — Test your defensive RTS skills in the brand-new Survival mode, holding off endless waves of demonic enemies alone or with friends.
  • Five Distinct Factions — Command the complete, massive roster of the franchise in skirmish and multiplayer modes, including the terrifying Nameless army.
  • Freeplay Sandbox — Jump back into the highly requested Freeplay mode to level up a custom Avatar in highly replayable, standalone scenarios.
  • Standalone Release — Jump straight into the endgame; this expansion runs completely independent of Shadow Wars, Dragon Storm, or Faith in Destiny.

Release Platforms:

  • Microsoft Windows (PC) — January 16, 2014
  • (Available on Steam and GOG.com as a standalone title).
