PC
SpellForce 2: Dragon Storm is the fantastic 2007 expansion pack to the critically acclaimed RTS/RPG hybrid SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars. Developed by Phenomic and published by JoWooD Productions, it is widely considered the absolute pinnacle of the second generation of SpellForce games. More importantly, it serves as the bittersweet swan song for Phenomic—it was the final game in the franchise developed by the original German studio before they were acquired by Electronic Arts.
The narrative picks up shortly after the events of the base game, but introduces a massive, existential crisis. The magical portal network that holds the shattered, floating islands of Eo together is actively collapsing. If the portals fail, the islands will be permanently isolated, leading to mass starvation and the collapse of civilization. You play as the “Soulcarrier,” a new Shaikan hero. Guided by the ancient dragon Ur, you must journey to uncover the source of the portal collapse, do battle against a mysterious new antagonist known as the Soulforger, and secure an alliance with the surviving, majestic dragons of Eo.
Gameplay
Dragon Storm didn’t just add a new campaign; it fundamentally changed the multiplayer and skirmish landscape by formally introducing a brand new, wildly unique playable faction.
Key gameplay mechanics and innovations include:
- The Shaikan Faction: In the base game, your heroes were Shaikan, but your armies were made up of the traditional Realm, Clans, or Pact forces. In Dragon Storm, the Shaikan become a fully fleshed-out, playable RTS faction. Their base-building relies heavily on blood magic and dragon alliances. Their unit roster includes heavily armored Blade Masters, spellcasting Blood Mages, and flying Dragonlings, culminating in the ability to summon a massive, devastating ancient dragon as their Titan.
- Shaikan Skill Trees: The RPG progression for your Avatar and party was significantly expanded. The developers introduced a dedicated “Shaikan” skill tree, allowing players to invest in unique blood magic, summoning abilities, and draconic combat arts that weren’t available in the base game.
- Deeper Questing and Puzzles: Phenomic listened closely to RPG fans who wanted more depth outside of the massive RTS battles. The 30-hour Dragon Storm campaign features a heavy emphasis on intricate side quests, environmental puzzles, and complex dialogue trees, making the world feel much more lived-in and interactive.
- Crafting Expansion: The loot system was heavily upgraded with the introduction of magical crafting sets. Players could hunt for specific, rare components across different maps to forge highly specialized, legendary armor and weapons for their party.
- Expanded Freeplay Mode: The highly popular Freeplay and cooperative multiplayer modes received massive updates, including new maps, an increased level cap, and the ability to play as the new Shaikan faction against the AI or other players.
Development and Legacy
Released in March 2007, Dragon Storm was universally praised as a textbook example of a perfect expansion pack. It fixed the minor balancing issues of Shadow Wars, delivered a compelling, high-stakes story, and gave players exactly what they wanted: the ability to command dragons in RTS combat.
However, its legacy is deeply tied to the fate of its developer. Shortly after its release, Phenomic was purchased by EA, becoming EA Phenomic (where they pivoted to free-to-play web games like BattleForge and Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances before being shut down). Because of this, Dragon Storm marks the definitive end of the “Golden Era” of SpellForce.
Following JoWooD’s eventual bankruptcy, the franchise was handed over to Nordic Games (THQ Nordic). Later, standalone SpellForce 2 expansions developed by different studios (Faith in Destiny in 2012 and Demons of the Past in 2014) attempted to continue the story, but they were famously plagued by outdated graphics and severe bugs, failing to capture the magic of Phenomic’s original work.
Today, in 2026, the masterpiece that is Dragon Storm is perfectly preserved. It is bundled directly into the SpellForce 2 – Anniversary Edition, completely optimized by THQ Nordic for modern widescreen monitors and operating systems, ensuring the original creators’ final vision for the world of Eo remains fully playable.
