Where to buy
SpellForce 3 is a 2017 real-time strategy and role-playing game hybrid developed by Grimlore Games and published by THQ Nordic. After the SpellForce 2 engine was stretched far beyond its lifespan with clunky, low-budget expansions, THQ Nordic formed a brand-new studio in Munich specifically to rescue and modernize the franchise. The result was an absolute triumph—a gorgeous, sprawling prequel that successfully brought the deeply niche RTS/RPG hybrid genre into the modern gaming era.
The narrative takes place roughly 500 years before the events of The Order of Dawn. Crucially, the apocalyptic “Convocation” hasn’t happened yet—the high-fantasy world of Eo is still a single, massive, unbroken continent rather than floating islands. Following the devastating Mage Wars, magic users are being violently hunted down and executed by a fanatical religious order known as the Purity of Light. You play as Corporal Tahar, the child of a notorious rebel mage. Serving in the Wolf Guard to atone for your father’s sins, you are tasked with investigating a mysterious, deadly plague known as the Bloodburn, which eventually unravels a massive conspiracy threatening the entire world.
Gameplay
SpellForce 3 completely rebuilt the franchise’s mechanics from the ground up, moving away from the simplistic base-building of the second game and introducing a highly strategic, sector-based economy heavily inspired by games like The Settlers and Company of Heroes.
Key gameplay mechanics and modernizations include:
- Sector-Based Economy: You cannot just build anywhere. The map is divided into distinct sectors. To expand, you must capture outposts. Each outpost provides a limited number of workers, forcing you to prioritize which resources (wood, stone, iron, food) to gather in which region.
- Carriage Logistics: Resources are not magically pooled globally. If your iron mine is in Sector A, and your blacksmith is in Sector B, physical horse-drawn carriages must transport the goods between outposts. Protecting your supply lines from enemy raids is critical to survival.
- The Hero Party: The RPG mechanics are incredibly deep. You command a party of up to four distinct heroes, each featuring massive, branching skill trees (covering disciplines like Brutality, Archery, White Magic, and Necromancy). You must constantly pause the action or use the streamlined hotbar to cast devastating area-of-effect spells and manage your party’s positioning during massive sieges.
- The Three Factions: For the base game’s skirmish and multiplayer modes, players could command three distinct factions: Humans, Orcs, and Elves. Each faction possesses unique economic mechanics, unit rosters, and colossal endgame Titan units.
Development and Legacy
Released in December 2017, SpellForce 3 was widely celebrated as a massive return to form. Critics praised its stunning, highly detailed environments, the deeply mature and grim narrative, and the phenomenal orchestral soundtrack. However, at launch, it suffered from a significant number of bugs and balancing issues, a common trap for such complex hybrid games.
Grimlore Games, however, remained incredibly dedicated to the project. Over the next few years, they released two massive, highly acclaimed standalone expansions: Soul Harvest (2019), which added Dwarves and Dark Elves, and Fallen God (2020), which added a nomadic Troll faction.
In December 2021 (and later hitting consoles in 2022), THQ Nordic released the SpellForce 3 Reforced edition. This was a massive, free update for all PC owners that completely overhauled the base game’s campaign, retrofitting it with the vastly superior mechanics, UI improvements, and bug fixes introduced in the expansions. Reforced also successfully mapped the incredibly complex RTS controls to a gamepad, allowing the franchise to debut on PlayStation and Xbox for the very first time.
Today, SpellForce 3 Reforced stands as the absolute pinnacle of the modern RTS/RPG hybrid genre, successfully reviving a beloved 2000s franchise with modern polish, deep tactical gameplay, and a phenomenal story.
