SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars
PC
SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars is a 2006 PC game developed by Phenomic Game Development and published by JoWooD Productions. Tasked with following up the massive, genre-blending success of the original 2003 game, Shadow Wars completely overhauled the game engine, modernized the graphics, and streamlined the notoriously punishing difficulty of the first era to create a smoother, more accessible RTS/RPG hybrid experience.
The narrative shifts the focus to a brand new, highly controversial faction in the world of Eo: the Shaikan. You play as an Avatar whose bloodline is bonded with Ur, the patriarch of the ancient dragons. Because of this dragon blood, the Shaikan are immortal, but they are deeply feared and hated by the rest of the world. However, when a terrifying army of dark elves and demonic “Shadows”—led by the dark alchemist Sorvina—begins a devastating invasion across the continent, the outcast Shaikan become the world’s only hope for survival.
Gameplay
While SpellForce 2 maintained the brilliant 50/50 split between action-RPG dungeon crawling and RTS base building, Phenomic made massive structural changes to make the game less clunky and more heavily focused on party dynamics.
Key gameplay mechanics and modernizations include:
- The Shaikan Companions: Instead of fighting alongside generic, summoned “Rune Warriors” like in the first game, your Avatar is now accompanied by a persistent, fully voice-acted party of Shaikan companions. They have distinct personalities, story arcs, and their own RPG skill trees, acting more like a traditional BioWare RPG party.
- Streamlined Factions: To make the RTS mechanics more cohesive, the original six races were consolidated into three distinct alliances. You command The Realm (Humans, Elves, Dwarves), The Clans (Orcs, Trolls, Barbarians), and The Pact (Dark Elves, Gargoyles, Shadows).
- Simplified Economy: The complex, multi-resource economy of the first game was significantly pared down. Players now only had to manage three resources: Stone (for buildings), Silver (for units and upgrades), and Lenya (a magical herb required for elite units and titans).
- The Skill Tree: The massive, highly punishing stat-point system of the first game was replaced with a more forgiving “Skill Web.” As your party leveled up, you could easily cross-class between combat and magic disciplines, allowing for much more flexible hero builds.
- Refined Click’n’Fight: The innovative UI from the first game was vastly improved. The radial menus became much more responsive, allowing players to instantly trigger companion heals, taunts, and devastating area-of-effect spells in the middle of massive sieges without missing a beat.
Development and Legacy
Released in April 2006, SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars was a massive critical success. Reviewers highly praised its stunning, vibrant 3D engine (which featured gorgeous water and lighting effects for the time) and appreciated the streamlined mechanics that removed the tedious grinding of the first game.
The game received a fantastic, highly celebrated expansion in 2007 called Dragon Storm, which continued the Shaikan narrative and perfected the game’s multiplayer balancing.
However, the legacy of SpellForce 2 gets famously messy after that. Following the bankruptcy of JoWooD Productions, the franchise was acquired by Nordic Games (now THQ Nordic). Years after the engine had aged, Nordic released two notoriously clunky, standalone expansions developed by entirely different studios: Faith in Destiny (2012) and Demons of the Past (2014). While these later expansions were heavily criticized by fans for bugs and dated visuals, the original 2006 Shadow Wars campaign remains an absolute masterclass in hybrid game design.
Today, the absolute best way to experience the game is via the SpellForce 2 – Anniversary Edition. Released by THQ Nordic in 2017, this version completely overhauled the game’s code to ensure it runs flawlessly on modern Windows operating systems, added widescreen support, and bundled Shadow Wars and Dragon Storm into one definitive, highly nostalgic package.
