Cossacks 3
Cossacks 3 is the 2016 real-time strategy game developed and published by the Ukrainian studio GSC Game World.
Despite the “3” in the title, this game is not actually a chronological continuation or mechanical evolution of the franchise. After a long hiatus (during which GSC Game World temporarily shut down and later reformed), the developers decided to play it incredibly safe. Cossacks 3 is fundamentally a 1:1, full 3D remake of the legendary 2001 original, Cossacks: European Wars (and its Back to War expansion).
It completely abandons the slow, methodical, logistical realism of Cossacks II and returns entirely to the chaotic, base-building, peasant-capturing, 17th and 18th-century megalomania that put the franchise on the map.
The Engine Upgrade: 32,000 Units
The biggest selling point of the 2016 release was the brand-new 3D engine. While the original game boasted an 8,000-unit cap, Cossacks 3 pushed modern PC hardware to allow for an absolutely staggering 32,000 units on the battlefield simultaneously.
Every single core mechanic from 2001 was faithfully ported over into this new 3D space:
- The Six Resources: You are still managing Wood, Food, Stone, Gold, Iron, and Coal. The brutal continuous economy returns—if you run out of coal, your musketeers stop firing; if you run out of gold, your mercenaries mutiny; if you run out of food, your massive army starves to death on the field.
- Classic Base Building: You are back to constructing massive sprawling towns, upgrading academies to transition from the 17th to the 18th century, and building heavy stone walls to protect your vulnerable peasants.
- Capture Mechanics: Unguarded artillery, peasant workers, and civilian buildings can still be instantly captured by a single fast-moving enemy cavalry unit, making map awareness absolutely vital.
- Formations: Grouping units with an Officer and a Drummer to form rigid lines, columns, and squares is still the key to multiplying your army’s combat effectiveness.
The Factions and DLC Expansion
At launch, the game featured 12 playable nations, including heavyweights like France, England, Russia, Ukraine, and Prussia, each retaining their classic architectural styles and unique units (like the lightning-fast Ukrainian Serdiuks or the heavily armored French Musketeers).
However, GSC Game World aggressively supported the game post-launch with several DLC packs (like Days of Brilliance, Rise to Glory, and The Golden Age). These expansions added brand-new historical campaigns and steadily reintroduced the rest of the classic nations—like Denmark, Bavaria, Switzerland, and Piedmont—eventually bringing the total playable roster up to 20 distinct factions, perfectly mirroring the Back to War roster.
Development and Legacy
Released in September 2016, Cossacks 3 had a notably rocky launch. Because GSC Game World essentially reverse-engineered the original 2001 code to run in 3D, the game launched with a myriad of bizarre bugs. At release, players discovered they could copy and paste their own units using the standard Windows keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V) to magically spawn infinite armies.
Fortunately, GSC quickly patched the game, fixing the bugs, improving the pathfinding, and adding highly requested features like Steam Workshop support. Modders quickly embraced the game, creating total conversions and custom maps that breathed new life into the multiplayer community.
Critically, the reception was mixed but ultimately positive among the target audience. Modern RTS fans criticized the game for feeling incredibly dated—pointing out that the pathfinding and UI lacked the quality-of-life advancements of the modern era. However, hardcore Cossacks veterans absolutely loved it. It delivered exactly what it promised: the exact same, unforgiving, massive-scale warfare of 2001, just painted with a beautiful, modern 3D brush.
