Cossacks 3: Days of Brilliance is the first official DLC expansion for GSC Game World’s 2016 real-time strategy remake, Cossacks 3.
Released in December 2016, just a few months after the launch of the base game, this expansion signaled GSC Game World’s commitment to aggressively fleshing out the game’s historical roster. Rather than fundamentally changing the core mechanics or the massive 32,000-unit engine, Days of Brilliance focused purely on injecting high-quality, highly requested content into the 17th and 18th-century sandbox, specifically shining a spotlight on the battlefields of Northern and Eastern Europe.
The Polish Campaign
The absolute centerpiece of the expansion is the brand-new, narrative-driven Polish Campaign.
It allows players to experience the absolute peak of Polish military might during the 17th century. The campaign completely ignores the base-building focus of standard skirmishes in favor of deeply tactical, massive-scale historical battles. You are tasked with leading the legendary Winged Hussars through their most glorious triumphs—from the brilliant tactical masterclass at the Battle of Klushino (where a vastly outnumbered Polish force shattered the Russian/Swedish army) all the way to the epic Saving of Vienna (the largest cavalry charge in human history that broke the Ottoman siege).
The New Nations: Denmark and the Netherlands
The expansion expanded the multiplayer and skirmish sandbox by formally introducing two highly distinct naval and economic powers to the playable roster:
- Denmark: A formidable power designed for players who want a balanced, robust military that transitions beautifully between land and sea. Denmark arrives with completely unique architecture and their own national musical themes, making them feel distinctly different from the generic Western European powers.
- The Netherlands: Swift, wealthy, and heavily focused on the 17th century. The Dutch are built around rapid economic expansion and naval dominance. Their unique buildings and early-game efficiency allow them to quickly amass resources and dominate the map before heavier, late-game factions can fully mobilize.
Exclusive Historical Missions and Original Units
For players who wanted standalone challenges outside of a linear campaign, Days of Brilliance added five brand-new, exclusive single-player scenarios. These missions teleport the player across Europe, placing them in the boots of various generals to rewrite or repeat key military events from the 17th and 18th centuries.
To support the new factions and the Polish campaign, the expansion also introduced five brand-new, original units that had never been seen in the base game. These additions were specifically tailored to flesh out the rosters of Denmark, the Netherlands, and Poland, adding new tactical layers to the early-game pike-and-shot formations.
Development and Legacy
Days of Brilliance was a highly successful first step in GSC Game World’s post-launch roadmap for Cossacks 3. Because the base game was essentially a 1:1 remake of the 2001 classic, veteran players were eager for the missing nations (like Denmark and the Netherlands, which were originally introduced in the Art of War expansion back in 2002) to be added back into the 3D engine.
A fantastic consumer-friendly move was that players who had purchased the Cossacks 3: Digital Deluxe Edition received this expansion absolutely free. Its success immediately paved the way for subsequent DLCs like Rise to Glory and Guardians of the Highlands, slowly transforming Cossacks 3 into the ultimate, definitive package for early modern warfare strategy fans.
