Blitzkrieg: Green Devils (2005)—extensively known in various regions as Iron Division (or Devils in Khaki in the Russian market)—is the final major official expansion pack for the original Blitzkrieg.
Unlike Burning Horizon and Rolling Thunder, which were released as standalone games tracking massive historical profiles of specific generals, Iron Division acts as a traditional add-on compilation. It requires the foundational games to run and targets hardcore veterans by shifting the spotlight to elite, micro-intensive operations.
The Double-Feature Campaigns
The core of Iron Division is split into two distinct, highly focused campaign tracks that push the tactical demands of the Enigma engine to its absolute limit:
- The 9th Panzer Division Campaign: This track follows the operational history of the German 9th Panzer Division across multiple major milestones of World War II. The gameplay tests your mastery of armored warfare logistics as you push through the rapid maneuvers of the Battle of France, transition into the grinding attrition of the Eastern Front, and ultimately try to survive the overwhelming Allied material superiority during the Normandy campaign.
- The “Eagles” Airborne Campaign: This is the expansion’s true mechanical shakeup. It centers entirely on elite paratroopers (Fallschirmjäger). Because airborne infantry drop behind enemy lines without immediate heavy vehicular support, these missions strip away the luxury of defensive tank screens. It transforms the game into a high-stakes exercise in stealth, utilizing dense cover, setting up localized ambush zones, and scavenging enemy weapon emplacements just to survive.
Tank School and Veteran Gauntlets
Beyond its primary narrative campaigns, Iron Division functions as an ultimate tactical sandbox toolkit:
- Tank School: A dedicated mini-campaign designed to act as a mechanical tutorial and testing ground for micro-tactics. It forces players to master the subtle physics of the game—such as exact armor thickness angling, high-explosive versus armor-piercing shell distribution, and weapon range boundaries.
- Elite Custom Scenarios: The add-on packs in highly challenging custom missions like Budapest Medal, Carthago, and Grey Tigers. These self-contained maps feature punishing AI configurations, offering zero safety nets or scripting hand-holding for the player.
Summary
Blitzkrieg: Iron Division is a deliberate love letter to the players who mastered the broad strokes of the earlier campaigns and wanted something that required surgically precise execution. By balancing a traditional armored progression campaign with the intense, infantry-focused vulnerability of paratrooper drop zones, it safely secured its spot as the ultimate tactical final chapter for the original game’s community.
