Arizona Sunshine Remake
Arizona Sunshine Remake is a 2024 virtual reality first-person survival shooter developed and published by Vertigo Games. Released on October 17, 2024, for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, and PC VR, it is a ground-up reconstruction of the massively influential 2016 VR classic Arizona Sunshine. Rebuilt utilizing the modernized engine and mechanics of its 2023 sequel (Arizona Sunshine 2), it completely revitalizes one of the earliest “must-play” titles of the modern consumer VR era.
Core Concept and Story
The narrative remains entirely faithful to the original 2016 game. You play as an unnamed, deeply sarcastic survivor wandering through the blistering, sunbaked deserts and deep mining caves of a post-apocalyptic southwestern America.
Armed with whatever weapons and scavenged ammunition you can find, you are tracking a faint radio signal, desperately hoping to find other living humans while blasting your way through relentless hordes of zombies (whom the protagonist affectionately refers to as “Freds”). While the story is relatively simple, its bright, sun-drenched, open environments offer a highly refreshing contrast to the typically dark, claustrophobic settings found in most zombie horror games.
Gameplay and Features
The remake didn’t just update the textures; it completely overhauled how the game feels to play, retrofitting it with the vastly superior physics and combat systems developed for Arizona Sunshine 2:
- Next-Gen Gunplay: The core shooting mechanics were completely revamped. Weapons now carry actual weight and punch. Players can choose between arcade-style “simple” reloading or an immersive, manual reloading system that requires you to physically drop the mag, grab a new one from your belt, slot it in, and rack the slide—adding massive tension when a horde is sprinting toward you.
- Melee Combat: This is the most significant mechanical addition. The original 2016 game strictly relied on firearms; if you ran out of ammo, you were effectively dead. The remake introduces brutal, physics-based melee weapons like machetes and crowbars, allowing you to physically chop through the undead when things get too close for comfort.
- The “Gore-geous” Mutilation System: Taking full advantage of modern VR hardware, the remake features a highly detailed, dynamic gore system. Shotgun blasts tear off specific limbs, and you can physically see the catastrophic damage your weapons inflict on the zombies in real-time.
- The Complete Package: The remake acts as the definitive edition. It includes the entire original campaign alongside all of its post-launch DLC seamlessly integrated, including the Dead Man and The Damned prequel campaigns, plus all the expanded Horde Mode maps.
- Full Co-op: The entire campaign, as well as the wave-based Horde Mode, can be played in drop-in, drop-out cooperative multiplayer with friends.
The Legacy and The Upgrade Path
When it launched, Arizona Sunshine Remake was heavily praised by the VR community for being exactly what a VR remake should be. It successfully smoothed out all the clunky, early-VR jank of the original. Furthermore, Vertigo Games earned significant goodwill from the community by offering a highly consumer-friendly upgrade path: players who already owned the original 2016 version could upgrade to the Remake for just $10, rather than paying the full $29.99 asking price.
Quick Note
Arizona Sunshine Remake takes one of the defining pioneer titles of early consumer VR and injects it with modern, state-of-the-art physics and gunplay.
In short: By adding brutal melee combat, a dynamic gore system, and drastically improved graphics, Vertigo Games successfully replaced their own classic, making the Remake the undisputed, definitive way to experience this sunbaked zombie bloodbath.
