Arizona Sunshine II
Arizona Sunshine 2 is a 2023 virtual reality first-person survival shooter developed and published by Vertigo Games. Released in December 2023 for Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2, SteamVR, and Pico 4, it is the highly anticipated, full-scale sequel to the 2016 VR pioneer. Instead of just offering a graphical facelift, the sequel completely modernized the franchise to meet current VR standards, delivering a significantly bloodier, more emotionally grounded, and mechanically satisfying road trip through the apocalypse.
Core Concept and “Buddy”
The unnamed, deeply sarcastic protagonist returns, still wandering the sun-scorched American Southwest and still referring to the undead hordes as “Freds.” However, the crushing isolation of the first game is immediately shattered by the game’s greatest addition: a German Shepherd named Buddy.
The narrative heavily shifts from a generic survival story into a surprisingly heartfelt “boy and his dog” tale. The protagonist sets out on a quest to track down Patient Zero in hopes of finding a cure, but the emotional core of the game is entirely centered on protecting and bonding with your new four-legged best friend.
Gameplay and Features
Arizona Sunshine 2 essentially served as the mechanical testing ground for the engine that Vertigo Games would later use to rebuild the original game in the 2024 Remake. It introduced several massive upgrades:
- The Best Boy: Buddy is not just a narrative set piece; he is a fully integrated gameplay mechanic. You can use a point-and-click system to command him to attack specific zombies, drag heavy corpses out of the way, or fetch out-of-reach keys and ammo. Better yet, Buddy wears a tactical harness that acts as an extra inventory slot, allowing you to holster two extra handguns directly onto the dog. (And yes, the game features a dedicated button to pet him, and you can play fetch with him using tennis balls or severed zombie arms).
- The Introduction of Melee: Unlike the 2016 original, which relied entirely on firearms, the sequel fully embraces physics-based melee combat. You can pick up machetes, crowbars, and pickaxes to physically hack your way through crowds of Freds.
- Next-Gen Gunplay and Gore: The shooting mechanics were vastly improved, offering players the choice between arcade reloads or highly immersive manual reloads (dropping the magazine, inserting a new one, and racking the slide). This is paired with a highly dynamic, satisfyingly gross mutilation system that allows you to shoot or chop off specific limbs dynamically.
- Full Co-Op: The entire, multi-hour story campaign can be played in two-player online co-op. The game also features a four-player cooperative Horde Mode for wave-based survival.
The Reception and Legacy
Arizona Sunshine 2 was praised by critics and VR enthusiasts for successfully bridging the gap between the clunky, experimental days of early VR and the polished, AAA expectations of the modern era. While some players noted that the core level design was still fairly linear, the drastically improved gunplay and the emotional attachment to Buddy elevated the game significantly. It proved that Vertigo Games could evolve their flagship franchise beyond just a simple shooting gallery.
Quick Note
Arizona Sunshine 2 is a massive, incredibly satisfying leap forward for the beloved VR franchise.
In short: It takes the sunny, sarcastic zombie-killing formula of the original game, injects it with excellent modern physics and melee combat, and pairs you with a tactical German Shepherd, resulting in one of the best narrative-driven shooters currently available in virtual reality.
