Where to buy
Legendary is a 2008 first-person shooter developed by Spark Unlimited and published by Gamecock Media Group in North America and Atari in Europe, released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows between late October and November 2008 — no relation to the Marvel deck-building card game or the mobile match-3 that share the name. Originally announced as Legendary: The Box, it holds Metacritic scores of 50 on PC and PS3 and 47 on Xbox 360, with one of the era’s widest critical spreads — Official Xbox Magazine’s 7.5 and The A.V. Club’s B− against IGN’s 2.3 and Eurogamer’s 2/10 — and a Steam user rating that has hovered at Mixed (56%) ever since.
The premise deserved better, and every review said so: art thief Charles Deckard is hired to lift an artifact from a New York museum, which turns out to be Pandora’s Box. He opens it. Werewolves, griffins, minotaurs, and golems pour into Manhattan, and a war between man and myth begins.

The Signet and the Secret Societies
Opening the Box brands Deckard with the Signet — a glowing mark on his hand that lets him siphon “animus,” the energy of slain creatures, to heal and, ultimately, to close what he opened. Two shadow organizations want him: the Black Order, which engineered the theft to command the creatures, and the Council of 98, a paramilitary society dedicated to containing them, whose alliance with Deckard sours the moment he stops being useful. The chase runs from a collapsing New York to a besieged London, and ends on a final image reviewers grudgingly loved — Deckard extending his branded hand to a griffin, brokering peace between man and myth.
Why It Missed
The autopsy was consistent across the spread. The creature roster was thrilling on first contact — the werewolves, fast and headshot-only, genuinely frightened reviewers — then repeated until, in Game Informer’s phrase, Pandora’s Box revealed itself as “a clown car full of a handful of repeating enemies.” Beneath the monsters sat a mediocre Unreal Engine 3 shooter: unresponsive movement, flat gunplay, checkpoint-starved difficulty (the surviving reddit threads are titled things like “did anyone else play Legendary? That was difficult”), and a perfunctory plot that Variety summed up as a cornball story attached to a real star — the environments, with Manhattan’s monster-wrecked skyline the game’s lasting image. The generous scores came from critics who read it as an ambitious B-movie; the brutal ones from critics who graded the shooter underneath.
Reception and Afterlife
It sold modestly, its publisher Gamecock was absorbed by SouthPeak weeks before launch, and Spark Unlimited — a studio founded by Call of Duty: Finest Hour veterans — moved on to Lost Planet 3 and Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z before closing in 2015. What survived is a genuine cult: “cult classic corner” retrospectives and Steam reviewers who argue the premise, atmosphere, and monster design earn forgiveness for the rest at the right price — which is the only price it has ever really sold for.
Where to Play It Today
Legendary is on Steam (published there by SouthPeak) for a few dollars, usually discounted to pocket change, with Steam Deck play possible but unverified; it is not on GOG. The Xbox 360 and PS3 discs circulate cheaply on the secondary market, with the 360 version — the worst-scored — also the most common. The fair pitch: a $2 monster-movie shooter with one unforgettable idea and a hundred forgettable firefights around it.
