Where to buy
Alan Wake Remastered is a 2021 action-adventure psychological horror game developed by Remedy Entertainment, ported by d3t, and published by Epic Games Publishing. It is a visually enhanced and updated version of the original 2010 cult classic, Alan Wake. Released to introduce the acclaimed thriller to a new generation of hardware—and notably bringing the franchise to PlayStation consoles for the very first time—the remaster preserves the original’s gripping narrative and tense atmosphere while upgrading its presentation with 4K visuals, reworked character models, and modern performance enhancements.
The game encompasses the entire original storyline, following bestselling thriller author Alan Wake as he searches for his missing wife, Alice, in the idyllic but sinister Pacific Northwest town of Bright Falls. The remaster also seamlessly includes the two original downloadable content (DLC) story expansions, “The Signal” and “The Writer,” which delve deeper into Alan’s psychological struggle within the supernatural Dark Place.
Gameplay
Alan Wake Remastered retains the exact gameplay loop and mechanics of the 2010 original, keeping the beloved “fight with light” combat system intact without altering the core design or physics. Players must still manage their flashlight batteries and use light to strip away the shadowy invulnerability of “The Taken” before dispatching them with firearms.
However, the gameplay experience is enhanced through several modern technical upgrades:
- Enhanced Visuals and Performance: The game supports 4K resolution and targets a smooth 60 frames per second on current-generation consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S), making combat feel significantly more fluid and responsive than the original 30fps release.
- Controller Integration: On the PlayStation 5, the game utilizes the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, allowing players to feel the tension of pulling the trigger on a revolver or the click of the flashlight.
- Updated HUD and UI: The user interface and heads-up display were slightly refined for better readability on modern high-resolution displays.
Development and Legacy
Following Remedy Entertainment’s acquisition of the Alan Wake publishing rights from Microsoft in 2019, the studio partnered with Epic Games Publishing to bring the franchise back into the spotlight. To handle the remastering process, Remedy collaborated with the UK-based studio d3t.
The development team focused on upgrading the game’s visuals without losing the gloomy, cinematic atmosphere that defined the original. This involved completely rebuilding character models—most notably updating Alan Wake’s facial model to closely resemble his live-action actor, Ilkka Villi—and upgrading textures, environmental assets, and lighting effects. Notably, due to expired licensing agreements, the heavy real-world product placements present in the 2010 game (such as Energizer batteries, Verizon billboards, and Ford vehicles) were removed and replaced with in-universe fictional brands.
The remaster also served as a strategic stepping stone to cement the “Remedy Connected Universe.” The developers added subtle new Easter eggs and QR codes linking to their 2019 game Control, directly setting the stage for the long-awaited sequel, Alan Wake II, which released in 2023.
