Amazon to Publish Future 007 Games as It Strengthens Control Over James Bond Franchise

IO Interactive’s 007 First Light has proven to be a major commercial and critical success, selling over 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours and climbing past 2 million shortly after launch. With that momentum, Amazon MGM Studios is now positioning itself to take a much more active role in future James Bond video games.

According to a new report from Eurogamer, while IO Interactive was able to self-publish 007 First Light (as the development deal was signed before Amazon acquired the full James Bond rights), any sequels or future entries in the series will fall under Amazon’s publishing umbrella.

Amazon’s Growing Influence

Amazon MGM Studios acquired the full creative and production rights to the James Bond franchise last year for a reported $20 million. Amazon Gaming boss Jeff Gattis previously told Polygon that while IO Interactive retains significant creative freedom on the current title, future Bond games would be overseen “by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios.”

In an updated statement released today, Amazon confirmed:

“Amazon MGM holds the rights to any future James Bond video games but it’s still too early to discuss future projects. We have a great relationship with IO Interactive and are proud of what we’ve accomplished together on 007 First Light. Our partners at IO will reveal more about 007 First Light in the near future and we’re looking forward to sharing what’s next.”

This marks a significant shift. IO Interactive had long expressed hope that 007 First Light would be the start of a trilogy, and the game’s ending leaves clear room for continuation. However, the increased involvement of Amazon suggests a more centralized approach to the Bond video game license moving forward.

Strong Reception for 007 First Light

Released on May 27, 2026, 007 First Light follows a young James Bond (portrayed by Irish actor Patrick Gibson) as he earns his 00 status. The game blends IO Interactive’s signature creative gameplay — mixing stealth, investigation, social engineering, and intense action — with classic Bond spectacle, gadgets, and globe-trotting locations.

Critics have largely praised the title, awarding it strong scores (87 Metacritic average), with many calling it the best James Bond game in decades. Eurogamer gave it 4 stars, noting its excellent fistfights and charm, while highlighting strong post-launch support plans from IO Interactive.

The game is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam & Epic Games Store), with a Nintendo Switch 2 version scheduled for later in 2026.

What This Means for the Future of Bond Games

This development raises questions about IO Interactive’s independence on the franchise. While the studio has built a strong relationship with Amazon, the publisher’s desire for greater oversight could influence the direction, scope, and release cadence of potential sequels.

For now, fans can look forward to additional content for 007 First Light, including planned DLC and replayability features. IO Interactive is expected to share more details about the game’s future in the coming months.

The success of 007 First Light has reignited excitement for James Bond in the gaming space — now the big question is how Amazon will shape the next chapter of 007’s digital legacy.
