Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings (frequently referred to simply as Age of Empires II or AoE2) is a 1999 real-time strategy (RTS) game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft. • 13 Original Civilizations: The base game launched with 13 highly distinct medieval factions spanning Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. While they share a generic tech tree, their unique passive bonuses, missing technologies, and distinct architectural styles dramatically alter how they are played.
• Refined Combat: AoE2 introduced military formations, allowing armies to move in a coordinated line, staggered box, or flank formation. This allowed for precise micro-management to dodge incoming catapult fire or protect vulnerable archers.

Developed over two years by Ensemble Studios, Age of Empires II was an absolute juggernaut upon its release in September 1999.
