Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings (frequently referred to simply as Age of Empires II or AoE2) is a 1999 real-time strategy (RTS) game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft. If the original 1997 game was a groundbreaking proof-of-concept for the historical RTS genre, Age of Empires II is the undisputed, perfected masterpiece. Transporting players out of antiquity and into the Middle Ages, the game is widely considered one of the greatest and most enduring strategy games of all time.

The narrative shifts to the post-classical era, allowing players to command legendary historical figures through massive, fully narrated campaigns. You ride alongside Joan of Arc to liberate France, follow Genghis Khan as his Mongol hordes sweep across Eurasia, and fight alongside Saladin to defend the Holy Land.

Gameplay

Age of Empires II retained the core four-resource, four-age progression of the original game but completely overhauled the user interface, pathfinding, and combat mechanics to create an incredibly deep, perfectly balanced rock-paper-scissors military system.

Key gameplay mechanics include:

  • The Four Ages: Players start in the Dark Age with a humble Town Center and a few villagers. To achieve victory, you must gather enough resources to advance through the Feudal Age, the Castle Age, and finally the Imperial Age, unlocking devastating late-game technologies like gunpowder units, heavy trebuchets, and fully upgraded paladins.
  • The Economy Loop: The foundation of victory. Players must constantly balance the production of Villagers to gather Food, Wood, Gold, and Stone. A massive improvement over the first game was the inclusion of the Town Bell (allowing villagers to quickly garrison inside the Town Center for safety) and automated farm reseeding.
  • Castles and Unique Units: The Castle Age introduces massive, stone-built Castles. These act as incredibly powerful defensive fortresses and serve as the only place where a civilization can train their specific “Unique Unit” (e.g., British Longbowmen, Teutonic Knights, or Persian War Elephants).
  • 13 Original Civilizations: The base game launched with 13 highly distinct medieval factions spanning Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. While they share a generic tech tree, their unique passive bonuses, missing technologies, and distinct architectural styles dramatically alter how they are played.
  • Refined Combat: AoE2 introduced military formations, allowing armies to move in a coordinated line, staggered box, or flank formation. This allowed for precise micro-management to dodge incoming catapult fire or protect vulnerable archers.

Development and Legacy

Developed over two years by Ensemble Studios, Age of Empires II was an absolute juggernaut upon its release in September 1999. It topped sales charts globally and was universally praised for its staggering amount of content, beautiful 2D isometric graphics, and brilliant multiplayer balancing. In 2000, Ensemble released the legendary The Conquerors expansion, which added Mesoamerican civilizations (the Aztecs and Mayans) and further perfected the game’s balance.

What makes Age of Empires II truly unique in gaming history, however, is its absolute refusal to die. While most games from 1999 faded into nostalgia, AoE2’s passionate community kept it alive through grassroots esports tournaments and massive fan mods (like Forgotten Empires).

Recognizing this immortal fanbase, Microsoft released Age of Empires II: HD Edition in 2013, which officially integrated the fan-made Forgotten mod and continued to release new, official expansions. The franchise took another massive leap in 2019 with the release of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. This version completely rebuilt the graphics in 4K, overhauled the underlying netcode, and modernized the UI.

Today, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition boasts a massive, highly lucrative professional esports scene (with massive tournaments like Hidden Cup and Red Bull Wololo). It also continues to receive heavy developer support; in early 2026, the game released The Last Chieftains DLC (introducing the Mapuche, Muisca, and Tupi civilizations) and announced a highly anticipated native macOS port for the Definitive Edition.

Key Features:

  • The RTS Gold Standard — Experience the flawless, methodical pacing of base-building, economic booming, and massive medieval warfare.
  • Historical Campaigns — Play through dozens of fully voiced, narrative-driven campaigns that trace the rise and fall of history’s greatest empires.
