Where to buy
Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is a 2018 real-time strategy (RTS) game developed by Forgotten Empires and Tantalus Media, and published by Xbox Game Studios. Created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the legendary 1997 original, it is a comprehensive, visually stunning remaster that breathed modern life into the game that first successfully merged historical city-building with fast-paced real-time combat.
Gameplay
Rather than completely remaking the game in a modern 3D engine, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition retains the exact original 1997 code and 2D isometric grid under the hood. The goal was to preserve the authentic, highly nostalgic “feel” of the original while stripping away the most frustrating elements of 90s game design.
Key gameplay modernizations include:
- 4K Visual Overhaul: Every single asset in the game—from the Villagers and Hoplites to the massive Egyptian Pyramids and terrain textures—was meticulously redrawn by hand and rendered in 4K resolution, providing incredibly smooth animations while maintaining the classic isometric perspective.
- Orchestral Soundtrack: The beloved, classic MIDI soundtrack (including the legendary title theme) was completely re-recorded by a live symphony orchestra.
- Quality of Life UI: The game introduced features that are absolutely essential for modern RTS players but were missing in 1997. This includes the “Attack Move” command, control groups, rally points, an idle villager button, and the ability to double-click to select all units of the same type.
- Expanded Scale: The maximum population cap was massively increased from a restrictive 50 to a sprawling 250 units, allowing for much grander, screen-filling battles.
- Farm Reseeding: One of the most requested features; players can finally queue up farms to automatically reseed when they are exhausted, eliminating a massive source of tedious micro-management.
Development and Legacy
The development of the Definitive Edition is a fantastic story of community passion. The primary developer, Forgotten Empires, originally started out as a group of hardcore modders who had created highly praised unofficial expansions for Age of Empires II. Microsoft was so impressed by their work that they hired them as official developers to remaster the entire franchise.
Upon its release in February 2018 (initially as a Windows Store exclusive before moving to Steam in 2019), the game received positive reviews for its gorgeous visuals and incredible respect for the source material. However, it also faced some criticism for strictly retaining the original 1997 pathfinding logic; units would still occasionally get stuck on trees or bump into each other in tight chokepoints, proving that beneath the shiny new coat of paint, it was still very much a 90s game.
Despite this, its success proved there was a massive, hungry market for classic RTS nostalgia, laying the exact blueprint for the massive juggernauts that would follow: Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition.
Interestingly, the legacy of the original Age of Empires took one final, totally unique evolutionary step in 2023. Microsoft released the Return of Rome DLC for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. This monumental update completely ported all 16 of the original Age of Empires I civilizations directly into the vastly superior AoE2 game engine, retrofitting them with modern pathfinding, gates, and formations. Today, while the 2018 Definitive Edition remains a gorgeous standalone museum piece, the Return of Rome DLC is widely considered by hardcore fans to be the ultimate way to play the first game competitively.
