Where to buy
Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition is a 2020 real-time strategy (RTS) game developed by Tantalus Media and Forgotten Empires, and published by Xbox Game Studios. Serving as a massive, ground-up remaster of Ensemble Studios’ divisive 2005 colonial-era classic, the Definitive Edition didn’t just update the graphics—it significantly rebalanced the gameplay, added brand-new civilizations, and heavily overhauled the game’s depiction of Indigenous cultures to be more historically accurate and respectful.
Bringing back the fast-paced, gunpowder-heavy combat of the original, it remains the most unique and experimental entry in the legendary Age of Empires franchise.
Gameplay
While the core mechanics of the 2005 original remain intact—including the fast-paced resource gathering and persistent Home City shipments—the Definitive Edition introduced several major system overhauls and quality-of-life (QoL) improvements.
Key gameplay mechanics and updates include:
- Historical Authenticity Overhauls: The developers worked directly with tribal consultants to correct the offensive historical inaccuracies of the original game’s Native American factions. The “Iroquois” and “Sioux” were properly renamed to the Haudenosaunee and Lakota. The controversial “Fire Pit” (where villagers danced to magically boost military stats) was replaced by the “Community Plaza,” and their ability to magically mine coins from gold veins was replaced by a historically accurate Fur Trade mechanic.
- The Home City Deck: The defining feature of AoE3 returns, but it was drastically rebalanced. Instead of forcing players to mindlessly grind offline matches to unlock vital shipment cards, every single card is unlocked for all players right from the start, immediately leveling the competitive playing field.
- New Base Civilizations: Right out of the box, the Definitive Edition added two brand-new, fully playable civilizations to the original 14: the Swedes (focused on aggressive mercenary tactics and Torp houses) and the Incas (focused on heavily fortified defensive structures).
- The Art of War: Borrowing a highly successful feature from Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, the game introduced a series of tutorial challenge missions hosted by Sun Tzu, designed to teach new players advanced competitive mechanics like build orders, unit kiting, and managing the macro-economy.
- Modernized UI: The originally massive, screen-hogging UI from 2005 was completely redesigned, offering three different layout options (Classic, Default, and Definitive) that free up massive amounts of screen real estate.
Development and Legacy
Upon its release in October 2020, Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition received highly positive reviews for its gorgeous 4K visual upgrade—which fully modernized the Havok physics engine for spectacular artillery destruction—and its commitment to cultural authenticity.
Following a successful launch, Microsoft supported the game with an impressive wave of premium DLC expansions over the next few years. This included the addition of the United States and Mexico as unique revolutionary civilizations (2021), the massive African Royals expansion adding the Hausa and Ethiopians (2021), and Knights of the Mediterranean adding the Italians and Maltese (2022).
To boost player numbers and ensure the multiplayer ladder remained healthy, Microsoft made a massive pivot in August 2023, shifting the base game to a Free-to-Play trial model on Steam. This allowed anyone to play the game for free using a weekly rotating roster of civilizations.
However, the game’s development ultimately hit a wall. In early 2024, World’s Edge teased a highly anticipated new expansion (heavily rumored to be Denmark and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). Tragically for the community, in January 2025, the studio officially announced that the DLC had been cancelled. World’s Edge confirmed that AoE3: DE was officially shifting into a maintenance phase to focus resources on Age of Mythology: Retold and Age of Empires IV.
While it no longer receives major content updates today in 2026, the game maintains a fiercely loyal community and stands as the absolute best way to play the colonial-era classic.
