The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon is the first of two major story expansions for the critically acclaimed 2019 action-RPG The Outer Worlds. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Private Division, the DLC was released in September 2020. It shifts the game’s tone slightly from upbeat corporate satire to a much darker, pulp-noir sci-fi mystery.
The narrative kicks off when a courier delivers a mysterious package to your ship, the Unreliable—a severed arm clutching a recording from a legendary, deceased freelance adventurer named “Lucky” Jones. This grim clue directs the crew to the Gorgon Asteroid, a desolate, highly dangerous former Spacer’s Choice research facility that was suddenly and violently evacuated years ago. Hired by the wealthy and reclusive Minnie Ambrose to uncover the truth behind her mother’s doomed project, the player must navigate the canyon-like asteroid, fight through marauders driven completely insane by experimental drugs, and uncover the horrifying corporate origins of “Adrena-Time,” the Halcyon colony’s most popular stimulant.
Gameplay
Peril on Gorgon seamlessly integrates into the base game, requiring players to have completed the main story quest on the planet Monarch to access it. While it doesn’t fundamentally change the core mechanics of The Outer Worlds, it expands upon almost all of them.
Key gameplay additions include:
- The Gorgon Asteroid: A massive, brand-new hub area. Unlike the bright and colorful planets of the base game, Gorgon is dark, rocky, treacherous, and atmospheric, filled with ruined laboratories and dangerous ravines.
- Expanded Progression: The expansion raised the game’s overall level cap from 30 to 33, allowing players to unlock new tiers of skills and continue customizing their builds for the late-game.
- New Science Weapons: The DLC introduced three bizarre new Science Weapons to hunt down, most notably the P.E.T. (Pest Extermination Tool), a glowing melee weapon that physically pulls enemies toward the player, and the Employee Benefits, a handgun that actually heals your companions and allies when you shoot them.
- Audio Logs: To enhance the detective-noir atmosphere, the DLC leans heavily into environmental storytelling. Players find “Portable Phonographs” scattered throughout the abandoned facilities, piecing together the grim final days of the Gorgon scientists through fully voice-acted audio diaries.
- New Perks and Flaws: The game introduced a handful of new perks and completely new phobia-based Flaws to further diversify character builds.
Development and Legacy
Announced during the Xbox Games Showcase in July 2020, Peril on Gorgon was designed to give fans exactly what they wanted: more of The Outer Worlds. Obsidian leaned heavily into 1930s pulp serials and classic film noir for inspiration, giving the expansion a distinctly different, more menacing vibe than the brightly lit corporate bureaucracy of the base game.
Upon release, it received generally positive reviews. Critics praised the high-quality writing, the compelling central mystery surrounding the Ambrose family, and the excellent vocal performances. However, some noted that structurally, it was very safe—it provided a fantastic 6-to-8 hour chunk of new content, but it didn’t take any massive mechanical risks or reinvent the core gameplay loop. It succeeded perfectly at being a highly polished, engaging side adventure that fleshed out the darkest corners of the Halcyon colony’s lore.
