The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice
Where to buy
The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition is a 2023 remastered compilation of the critically acclaimed 2019 action-RPG. Published by Private Division and developed by Obsidian Entertainment in conjunction with co-developer Virtuos, this edition was specifically designed to bring the game to current-generation consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S) and modernize it for high-end PCs.
Serving as the definitive package for the Halcyon colony, the Spacer’s Choice Edition bundles the base game together with both of its major story expansions—Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos—while overhauling the game’s visuals, performance, and underlying systems to take advantage of more powerful hardware.
Gameplay Modifications
Because the base game and its DLCs were already established, the Spacer’s Choice Edition does not alter the core narrative, quest structure, or mechanics. However, it introduces several notable tweaks to the progression and moment-to-moment gameplay.
Key additions and changes include:
- The Complete Package: The edition seamlessly integrates the base game with both DLC expansions from the very beginning, allowing players to access the Gorgon Asteroid and the floating islands of Eridanos naturally as they progress through the campaign.
- Massive Level Cap Increase: The most significant gameplay change is the removal of the previous level caps (which peaked at 36). The Spacer’s Choice Edition pushes the absolute maximum level cap all the way to 99. This allows players to eventually max out nearly every single skill tree, effectively turning their character into an unstoppable, jack-of-all-trades demigod by the late game.
- Tweaked AI: The developers adjusted the enemy and companion artificial intelligence, making hostile encounters slightly more dynamic and ensuring your crewmates behave more intelligently during chaotic firefights.
Development and Legacy
The announcement of the Spacer’s Choice Edition was initially met with excitement, as fans were eager to see the vibrant art style of The Outer Worlds rendered with current-generation technology. The visual upgrades were substantial: it introduced higher-resolution environments, 4K 60FPS support, volumetric lighting, improved particle effects, denser foliage, and completely overhauled character models with vastly improved facial animations.
However, upon its release in March 2023, the launch was highly controversial. In a twist of deep, unintended irony, the edition perfectly lived up to the in-game lore of the “Spacer’s Choice” brand—which is famous for selling cheap, defective, and broken products. The game launched with severe optimization issues across all platforms. PC and console players experienced massive framerate drops, stuttering, and visual bugs that were not present in the original 2019 release.
Furthermore, the pricing model drew criticism. Instead of offering a free next-gen upgrade (which had become an industry standard for many titles), players who already owned the base game and both DLCs had to pay a $10 upgrade fee to access the Spacer’s Choice Edition.
Following the rocky launch, Private Division and Obsidian released a series of substantial patches throughout 2023 that successfully stabilized the framerate and fixed the graphical anomalies. Today, with the bugs ironed out, it is widely considered the best and most complete way to experience the Halcyon colony.
