The Callisto Protocol is a 2022 sci-fi survival horror game developed by Striking Distance Studios and published by Krafton. Directed by Glen Schofield, the co-creator of the legendary Dead Space franchise, the game was heavily marketed as the spiritual successor to that 2008 classic, promising a return to terrifying, brutal, and claustrophobic deep-space horror.

Set in the year 2320, the narrative follows Jacob Lee (portrayed by Josh Duhamel), a freelance freight transporter working the Jupiter-to-Callisto route. After his ship is hijacked by a rebel group known as the Outer Way (led by Dani Nakamura, played by Karen Fukuhara), the ship crashes on Callisto. Without trial or explanation, Jacob is thrown into Black Iron Prison, a brutal maximum-security penitentiary run by the enigmatic Warden Duncan Cole. Almost immediately, a mysterious biological outbreak sweeps through the facility, mutating the inmates and guards into grotesque, hyper-aggressive monsters known as Biophages. Jacob must fight his way out of the prison, teaming up with Dani to uncover the dark, cult-like corporate conspiracy behind the outbreak.

Gameplay

While heavily inspired by Dead Space—featuring a diegetic UI where health is displayed on a neck implant and ammo count is holographically projected on weapons—The Callisto Protocol drastically shifted the combat focus away from ranged dismemberment to visceral, bone-crunching melee brawls.

Key gameplay mechanics include:

  • The Dodge System: The most defining (and divisive) mechanic of the game. Instead of relying on a dedicated dodge button, players must hold the left thumbstick left or right as an enemy attacks to weave out of the way, alternating directions for combo attacks.
  • Melee Combat: Ammunition is incredibly scarce for the first half of the game, forcing players to rely heavily on Jacob’s Stun Baton. Combat involves dodging incoming strikes and punishing enemies with heavy melee combos, culminating in a “skill shot”—a quick-draw firearm blast that deals massive damage to stagger the enemy.
  • The GRP: Jacob acquires the Gravity Restraint Projector (GRP), a gauntlet that allows him to telekinetically grab enemies and objects. Players can use the GRP to pull enemies close or hurl them into spinning fans, spiked walls, and bottomless pits to instantly kill them and conserve ammo.
  • Mutation System: If players do not kill a Biophage quickly enough, tentacles will erupt from its chest. If the tentacles aren’t shot off, the monster will aggressively mutate into a larger, heavily armored, and significantly deadlier version of itself.
  • Brutal Death Animations: Honoring the Dead Space pedigree, the game features incredibly graphic, uniquely animated death sequences for Jacob if he fails to dodge hazards, gets overwhelmed by enemies, or steps into environmental traps.

Development and Legacy

The Callisto Protocol was initially announced with a bizarre caveat: it was originally meant to be set within the same narrative universe as the battle royale game PUBG: Battlegrounds (300 years in the future). However, as development progressed, the studio realized the lore was too restrictive, and it was eventually spun off into its own standalone sci-fi universe.

Built on Unreal Engine 4, the game boasted absolutely jaw-dropping production values upon its release in December 2022. The lighting, facial capture, and gooey, visceral gore effects were praised as some of the most impressive of the generation. However, the game received a highly polarized critical reception. Many reviewers and players criticized the melee dodge mechanic, arguing that while it worked fine in 1v1 encounters, it completely fell apart and became frustratingly clunky when the game threw multiple enemies at the player at once. Additionally, the PC version suffered from severe stuttering and optimization issues at launch.

Commercially, the game was considered a massive disappointment for Krafton, failing to recoup its massive $162 million budget. Following the game’s release and the launch of its story-concluding DLC, Final Transmission (June 2023), Glen Schofield departed Striking Distance Studios.

While a direct sequel is highly unlikely, the Callisto universe continued via a spin-off. In late 2024, Striking Distance released Redacted (formerly Project Birdseye), a fast-paced, colorful isometric roguelike set within the crumbling walls of Black Iron Prison, offering a completely different, arcade-heavy take on the game’s brutal setting.

Key Features:

  • Up-Close and Brutal — Master a weighty, visceral melee combat system that forces you to dodge enemy strikes and shatter bones with a Stun Baton.

  • Hollywood Cast — Experience a cinematic narrative featuring strong motion-capture performances from Josh Duhamel, Karen Fukuhara, and Sam Witwer.
  • Final Transmission DLC — Play the post-launch story expansion that picks up immediately after the cliffhanger ending of the base game, concluding Jacob Lee’s nightmare.
