Supreme Commander 2: Infinite War Battle Pack is the major 2010 downloadable expansion for Supreme Commander 2, developed by Gas Powered Games and published by Square Enix. Released just six months after the base game, it was designed to bridge the gap between the simplified mechanics of the sequel and the tactical complexity that fans of the original Forged Alliance craved.

By late 2010, the “Infinite War Battle Pack” became the essential final piece of the Supreme Commander 2 puzzle. It didn’t just add content; it fundamentally altered the game’s flow by introducing new research paths, game-changing “minor” and “major” experimentals, and an overhaul to the economy that added depth to long-form skirmishes.

Overview: The Arms Race Escalates

While the expansion doesn’t introduce a new story campaign, it acts as a “narrative enhancement” for the multiplayer and skirmish modes. The premise is one of an accelerating arms race: as the three factions—the UEF, the Cybran Nation, and The Illuminate—realize the war will not end quickly, they deploy their most experimental, high-risk technologies to gain a decisive edge.

Gameplay: Strategic Evolution

The Battle Pack’s primary impact was on the Research Tree. It introduced dozens of new upgrades and “Boosts” that allowed players to specialize their armies even further.

Key gameplay mechanics and additions include:

  • Mass Extractor Veterancy: A subtle but massive change. With the DLC enabled, Mass Extractors gain efficiency the longer they survive, eventually quintupling their output. This rewards players for successfully defending their territory and makes “turtling” a more viable long-term strategy.
  • Specialized Research Upgrades: Every faction received unique tactical tools. The Cybrans gained Naval Jump Jets (allowing boats to leap over islands), the Illuminate received Air Teleport, and the UEF gained Speed Overdrive for land units.
  • The Return of the King: The DLC famously brought back the Monkeylord—the legendary Cybran spider-bot from the first game—answering one of the community’s biggest requests and restoring the Cybran’s signature “stealth-assassin” playstyle.

The New Arsenal

The Battle Pack added several units and structures that filled specific tactical gaps for each faction:

  • United Earth Federation (UEF): Focused on “Ironclad” defense and siege power.
    • The Aegis: A massive experimental shield generator that can cover an entire base.
    • The Jackhammer: A mobile, direct-fire artillery cannon that must “unpack” to fire, dealing devastating damage to enemy structures.
    • Super Triton: An experimental “shotgun” dreadnought that trades range for overwhelming close-quarters firepower.
  • The Illuminate: Focused on precision and “magic-like” technology.
    • The Shotja: A hovering sniper bot that deals extreme damage from long range but fires slowly.
    • The Sooprizer: A gargantuan experimental gunship designed for direct fire, capable of tanking massive damage while melting ground targets.
    • The Buhbledow: A specialized experimental missile designed specifically to collapse enemy shields in a wide radius.
  • Cybran Nation: Focused on subversion and technical “shenanigans.”
    • The Boomerang: A unique nuclear defense structure that doesn’t just shoot down nukes—it reprograms them to fly back to the attacker’s base.
    • The Cicada: A mobile cloak generator that hides all nearby units from radar and vision.
    • The Recycler: A stationary structure that automatically reclaims wreckage in a radius, turning the debris of battle into fresh Mass.

Development and Legacy

The Infinite War Battle Pack is often credited with “saving” the reputation of Supreme Commander 2 among hardcore fans. The combination of the DLC and the concurrent October 2010 “Economy Patch” (which reworked building costs) turned the game into a much more competitive and strategically deep experience.

As of May 2026, the Battle Pack is considered “standard equipment” for the game. On Steam, the Supreme Commander community generally treats the game as incomplete without it. While it didn’t return the series to the 80km-wide maps of the original, it successfully injected the “mad scientist” creativity that defines Chris Taylor’s work, making every skirmish a chaotic playground of experimental death machines.

Key Features:

  • 8 New Multiplayer Maps — Fight across diverse new locales like “Igneous,” “Seraphim Isles,” and the “QAI Prototype Facility.”
  • Game-Changing Experimentals — Deploy the Monkeylord, Aegis Shield, and Universal Colossus to dominate the late-game battlefield.
  • Deepened Research Trees — Customize your faction with naval jump jets, air teleportation, and structure sacrifice abilities.
  • Strategic Rebalancing — New AI options and economic veterancy mechanics ensure that skirmishes remain challenging and unpredictable.
  • The Definitive Experience — Adds the crucial tactical variety required to keep the Supreme Commander 2 meta-game fresh for years.

Release Status:

  • Release Date: September 28, 2010
  • Platform: Microsoft Windows (Steam), Mac, Xbox 360 (Map pack only)
