Saints Row: Gat out of Hell is a 2015 standalone open-world action-adventure video game developed co-jointly by Volition and High Voltage Software, and published by Deep Silver. Released in January 2015 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, the title functions as a standalone epilogue expansion to 2013’s Saints Row IV, concluding the cosmic and supernatural arc of the original Third Street Saints timeline.

As a standalone expansion, the game did not require ownership of Saints Row IV to run, though it directly recycled its core engine assets and mechanics. It occupies a highly experimental, satirical space in the series’ history, leaning fully into supernatural mythology, occult imagery, and musical theater parody. While it was praised for its creative weaponry and liberating traversal physics, it faced criticism for its short length and for substituting traditional scripted story missions with a reliance on sandbox side activities.

A Musical Escapade in New Hades: Narrative Premise

The narrative picks up directly after the events of Saints Row IV. While celebrating Kinzie Kensington’s birthday aboard the Saints’ spaceship, the crew interacts with an ancient, occult Ouija board that once belonged to Aleister Crowley. The board suddenly opens a spiritual rift, and The Boss (the President of the United States) is violently dragged into the underworld. It is revealed that Satan has abducted the Boss with the explicit intention of forcing them to marry his rebellious daughter, Jezebel, to crown a worthy heir to the throne of Hell.

Refusing to let their leader burn, legendary Saints enforcer Johnny Gat and tech expert Kinzie Kensington deliberately leap through the portal to mount a rescue mission inside New Hades, a literal, floating metropolitan manifestation of Hell split into five distinct island districts.

To systematically weaken Satan’s corporate and supernatural grip, Johnny and Kinzie form an unholy alliance with a network of historical and fictional ghosts who hold deep personal grudges against the Devil:

  • Dane Vogel: The deceased corporate CEO of the Ultor Corporation (from Saints Row 2), now operating a massive, capitalist corporate real estate empire deep within Hell.
  • William Shakespeare: The legendary English playwright, reimagined as a nightclub owner locked in eternal damnation, supplying the Saints with tactical intelligence.
  • Blackbeard: The notorious high-seas pirate captain, operating a spectral ghost ship across the rivers of Styx to execute black-market weaponry trades.
  • Vlad the Impaler: The brutal, ancient ruler of Wallachia, trapped inside an underworld prison cell until the Saints weaponize his bloodlust.

The Underworld Musical: In one of the most famous, unhinged tonal shifts in franchise history, Gat out of Hell features a fully choreographed, multi-character Broadway-style musical numbers sequence. Inspired directly by classic Disney princess animated films like Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, Satan, Jezebel, Johnny, and Kinzie break out into a soaring, theatrical group song mapping out their clashing internal motivations, serving as a brilliant stamp of Volition’s signature meta-parody humor.

Gameplay Overhauls: Angelic Flight and Seven Deadly Sins

While the core gunplay loop and asset tracking heavily mirrored the Steelport layout of Saints Row IV, High Voltage Software completely stripped away traditional Earth-bound physics to introduce a highly liberating Supernatural Traversal Suite:

1. Angelic Flight

Discarding the super-jumps and air-glides of the previous game, Gat out of Hell gifted Johnny and Kinzie a set of massive, glowing demonic wings. This framework introduced true, high-velocity flight mechanics. Players manage a flight stamina pool and physical aerodynamic momentum to swoop down flaming highways, bank sharply around gothic skyscrapers, and execute vertical climbs across the underworld skyline without ever touching the floor.

2. The Seven Deadly Sins Weaponry

Beyond standard demonic firearms, the expansion introduced seven hyper-specialized, mythic ultimate weapons themed explicitly around the Seven Deadly Sins:

  • Armchair-A-Geddon (Sloth): A fully drivable, motorized leather recliner equipped with dual-mounted miniguns and automated anti-aircraft homing micro-missile batteries.
  • Ark of the Covenant (Wrath): A mystical holy vessel that forcefully sucks out the souls of nearby demons before firing them out as explosive, bouncing plasma projectiles.
  • Gallows Dodger (Lust): A highly talkative, sentient golden pistol that actively commentates on firefights, filling an internal meter with consecutive kills to shoot high-velocity explosive charges.
  • Boom Chicka (Lust variant/Greed): A specialized shotgun that shoots customized perfume clusters, forcing targeted demons to walk blindly toward the player in an infatuated trance.

Structural Shift: Satan’s Wrath Meter

The game completely abandoned the classic Saints Row structural campaign flow, entirely omitting standard linear mission select menus. Instead, progression was governed strictly by the Satan’s Wrath Meter.

To force Satan into a direct showdown, the player had to systematically enrage him by conquering New Hades. This required players to repeatedly engage in specialized, hellish activities across the districts, such as Hellblazing (aerial checkpoints racing races), Torment Fraud (controlling a damned soul trying to throw itself under oncoming traffic), and Mayhem (un-gated structural destruction). Filling specific checkpoints on the Wrath Meter automatically triggered major cinematic cutscenes and boss battles, culminating in a final choice of five distinct narrative endings that determined the ultimate fate of the universe.

Retrospective Standing

Saints Row: Gat out of Hell occupies an interesting, highly distinct position as a historical time capsule. Following the financial failure of the grounded 2022 Saints Row reboot and the subsequent abrupt closure of developer Volition by Embracer Group in August 2023, this 2015 standalone expansion has experienced a notable critical re-evaluation. While it was criticized at launch for its brief duration and recycled open-world architecture, modern retrospective circles celebrate it as the definitive, wild curtain call for the original, beloved versions of Johnny Gat, Kinzie, and the Boss.

The software is perfectly preserved and highly accessible across modern computing channels today:

On PC via Steam, the title remains fully stable and optimized. The game engine runs flawlessly under modern 64-bit Windows 11 frameworks, easily supporting native 4K resolutions and high refresh rates on entry-level current GPUs without requiring extensive community wrappers. On modern consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S via backward compatibility, the game benefits from modern NVMe SSD architectures to execute swift asset streaming and minimal loading gates, keeping the unhinged, musical-parody journey to Hell fully functional for retro enthusiast squads.
