Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is a 2024 massive expansion developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Released on June 21, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, it serves as the highly anticipated, sole downloadable content for the 2022 Game of the Year. Rather than simply bolting on a few new dungeons, director Hidetaka Miyazaki delivered an expansion so gargantuan in scope, lore, and mechanical additions that it practically felt like a full sequel, quickly cementing itself as one of the highest-rated expansions in gaming history.

Core Story

To access the expansion, players must have defeated two of the base game’s most formidable optional bosses (Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood). Interacting with the withered arm protruding from Mohg’s cocoon transports the Tarnished into the Land of Shadow—a scorched, veiled realm entirely disconnected from the Lands Between, physically hidden by Queen Marika the Eternal.

You arrive following in the footsteps of the enigmatic demigod Miquella the Kind, who has divested himself of his flesh and lineage to journey into this dark realm. As you track Miquella’s path, you encounter a ragtag band of his devoted followers. The narrative forces you to uncover the horrific, buried secrets of Marika’s ascension to godhood, navigate a devastating holy war, and face off against Messmer the Impaler, a forgotten child of Marika tasked with burning the realm’s inhabitants in an endless, bloody crusade.

Gameplay and Features

Shadow of the Erdtree takes the established formula of the base game and turns the intensity, verticality, and difficulty dials up to eleven:

  • The Scadutree Blessing: To prevent level-200 players from simply steamrolling the DLC, FromSoftware introduced a localized scaling mechanic. You must scour the map for Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes. Consuming these at Sites of Grace provides massive percentage-based buffs to your attack power and damage negation (and that of your Spirit Summons). If you ignore these fragments, even the most basic enemies in the Land of Shadow will kill you in a single hit.
  • Masterclass Map Design: While the base game’s map spread outward horizontally, the Land of Shadow is a masterclass in overlapping verticality. The map is incredibly dense; looking off a cliff edge might reveal a poisoned swamp far below, a jagged mountain peak above, and a hidden legacy dungeon suspended in the middle, all seamlessly interconnected by hidden caves and spirit springs.
  • Eight New Weapon Types: The expansion radically expanded the combat sandbox by introducing entirely new fighting styles. These include Martial Arts / Hand-to-Hand (allowing you to literally dropkick armored knights), Light Greatswords (featuring lightning-fast, graceful combos), Perfume Bottles (acting as magical, elemental shotguns), Beast Claws, Great Katanas, Backhand Blades, Throwing Blades, and Thrusting Shields.
  • Punishing Boss Roster: The DLC is famously brutal, pushing the combat engine to its absolute limits with hyper-aggressive bosses that feature endless combo strings and massive area-of-effect attacks. Encounters like Rellana Twin Moon Knight, Bayle the Dread, Messmer, and the final boss demand absolute mechanical perfection.
  • New Spells and Summons: Players gained access to a massive arsenal of new Incantations and Sorceries, ranging from summoning swarms of spectral butterflies to channeling the roaring heads of ancient dragons.

PC Version

Released on Steam, the PC version remains the absolute playground for the Elden Ring community. While the expansion launched with a few minor performance stutters on certain hardware configurations, patches quickly stabilized the experience. The true highlight of the PC platform is the legendary modding community. The creators of the famous Seamless Co-op Mod worked tirelessly to update their software for the DLC, allowing PC players to bypass the traditional, restrictive summoning mechanics and ride their spectral steeds alongside their friends through the entirety of the Realm of Shadow.

Console Versions

Shadow of the Erdtree seamlessly integrates into the base game across both console generations. While it remains perfectly playable on the older PS4 and Xbox One, the massive, particle-heavy boss fights and the looming, spectacular visual of the bleeding, shadowy Erdtree heavily benefit from the horsepower of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. On current-gen hardware, utilizing the 60 FPS Performance mode is practically mandatory, as the split-second dodging required for the DLC’s frantic boss encounters relies heavily on smooth frame pacing.

Quick Note

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is a beautiful, deeply melancholic, and punishingly difficult victory lap for FromSoftware. It answers long-standing lore questions while introducing some of the most mechanically demanding fights the studio has ever designed.

In short: If you want to explore a gorgeously ruined, multi-layered map where you can beat a gigantic, flaming wicker-man to death using nothing but Kung-Fu and a magical perfume bottle, you must answer Miquella’s call.
