Elden Ring is a 2022 action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Released on February 25, 2022, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, it represents the monumental evolution of the “Soulsborne” genre. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki with worldbuilding provided by fantasy author George R.R. Martin, it successfully transitions the studio’s famously punishing combat and intricate level design into a massive, breathtakingly open world, earning near-universal critical acclaim and winning countless Game of the Year awards.

Core Story

Set in the sprawling, magically devastated realm known as the Lands Between, the narrative is triggered by the shattering of the titular Elden Ring. Following the disappearance of Queen Marika the Eternal, her demigod offspring claim the shards of the Ring (the Great Runes), triggering a catastrophic, world-ruining war known as the Shattering.

You play as a Tarnished—an exile previously banished from the Lands Between, now beckoned back by grace. Guided by the enigmatic maiden Melina, your objective is to traverse the hostile continent, hunt down the corrupted demigods, mend the Elden Ring, and claim the mantle of Elden Lord.

Gameplay and Features

Elden Ring takes the core, stamina-based combat of Dark Souls and places it in an environment that heavily encourages exploration and player freedom:

• The Open World: Moving away from strictly linear, labyrinthine corridors, the game features a massive, truly open map. Players are given immense freedom to explore across vast regions like the lush Limgrave, the rot-infested Caelid, and the sunken lakes of Liurnia, organically discovering hidden caves, catacombs, and minor bosses without quest markers or map checklists.
• Torrent: To navigate the massive distances, players are given a spectral steed named Torrent. He allows for incredibly fast traversal, features a double-jump to scale cliffs, and introduces dynamic, high-speed mounted combat against dragons and roaming cavaliers.
• Legacy Dungeons: While the overworld is open, the game still features “Legacy Dungeons”—massive, handcrafted, tightly woven fortresses (like Stormveil Castle and Volcano Manor) that retain the classic, punishing, shortcut-heavy level design of previous FromSoftware games.
• Ashes of War: A highly flexible customization system. Instead of weapon arts being permanently locked to specific swords, players can swap “Ashes of War” at checkpoints (Sites of Grace) to change a weapon’s special move and elemental scaling on the fly.
• Spirit Ashes: To help mitigate the game’s brutal difficulty, players can ring a bell to summon AI companions (ranging from packs of wolves to legendary knights or a mimic of yourself) to draw aggro and assist during massive boss fights.
• Jump Mechanics and Stealth: For the first time in the core Souls lineage, there is a dedicated jump button, allowing for heavier vertical exploration and jump-attacks to break enemy posture. It also introduces a crouch mechanic to utilize tall grass for stealth kills.

PC Version

Released on Steam, the PC version is the definitive way to play for many, despite a famously rocky launch. Initially plagued by shader compilation stuttering, these issues were eventually ironed out through patches. Today, the PC platform shines thanks to an incredible modding community. The most famous example is the Seamless Co-op mod, which completely rewrites the game’s multiplayer framework to allow players to ride Torrent and explore the entire game uninterrupted with friends, bypassing the traditional, restrictive summoning sign system entirely.

Console Versions

Releasing as a cross-generation title, the game runs admirably on the older PS4 and Xbox One hardware, but the massive scale of the glowing Erdtree and complex particle effects are best experienced on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. On current-gen consoles, the game offers a choice between a 4K Quality mode and a 60 FPS Performance mode, alongside significantly reduced loading times—a crucial feature for a game where you will inevitably die and respawn hundreds of times.

Quick Note

Elden Ring is a monumental achievement in open-world game design, refusing to hold the player’s hand and rewarding pure, unbridled curiosity with spectacular boss fights and hidden subterranean cities. In June 2024, it received the massive Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, which added a profoundly challenging new map and cemented the game’s legendary status.
