Elden Ring Nightreign is a 2025 roguelike action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Released on May 30, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, it is a massive spin-off to the legendary 2022 Game of the Year. Blending FromSoftware’s signature punishing combat with deep cooperative and roguelike survival mechanics, the game offers a completely new, highly replayable way to experience the Elden Ring universe.

Core Story

Nightreign takes place in an alternate timeline of the Lands Between. Following the cataclysmic event of the Shattering, a terrifying phenomenon known as the Primordial Night descended upon the realm, plunging it into an eternal darkness. The lands are now overrun by monstrous creatures from other realms and ruled by eight beings of tremendous power known as the Nightlords.

The familiar Limgrave region has been warped into Limveld, a chaotic, shifting landscape. The Roundtable Hold—now dilapidated and in disrepair—serves as a safe haven for warriors known as Nightfarers. You play as one of these chosen champions, summoned by the Priestess to venture into the creeping darkness, hunt down the Nightlords, and put an end to the eternal Night.

Gameplay and Features

Taking a radical departure from the open-world exploration of the base game, Nightreign focuses on session-based, cooperative survival:

• 3-Player Co-Op Survival: While the game can be played solo, it is built heavily around 3-player cooperative expeditions. Teams have exactly three in-game days to explore Limveld, gather supplies, and prepare before facing a terrifying Nightlord.
• Roguelike Progression: Every match features a procedurally generated version of Limveld with randomized enemies, loot, and events. Similar to battle royale mechanics, a relentless environmental threat (the Night’s Tide) acts as a shrinking safe zone. Stepping outside the protective circle rapidly drains your health.
• The Nightfarers: Instead of building a custom Tarnished from scratch, players choose from eight distinct, pre-defined heroes. Characters include Wylder (a greatsword-wielding knight with grappling hooks), Guardian (a heavy-shield defender), Recluse (an isolated witch), and Executor (a katana-wielding Crucible Knight). Each character features a unique passive ability, an active character skill, and an ultimate art that synergize with the team.
• The 3-Day Cycle: Expeditions are a race against time. During the day, players must hunt for runes to level up, loot weapons, and find talismans. At the end of each night, players face harrowing waves of enemies and minor bosses. If you survive until the third day, you confront the Nightlord.
• Revival Mechanics: Death is punishing but not immediate. If a player is downed during the day, allies can rapidly attack their body to bring them back to life at the cost of a level. If the entire team is wiped out during the night, the expedition ends.

PC Version

Released on Steam, the PC version of Nightreign was a massive success, pulling in “Very Positive” reviews from tens of thousands of players within its first month. Because the game relies heavily on fast-paced, cooperative action and synergy between the eight unique Nightfarers, the PC platform’s ease of communication and seamless matchmaking made it a highly popular hub for the community. The game runs beautifully on modern hardware, requiring a 64-bit Windows 10/11 OS and reasonably accessible specs (like an NVIDIA GTX 1060 for minimum requirements) to maintain a stable framerate during the chaotic, effect-heavy Nightlord boss fights.

Console Versions

Elden Ring Nightreign was released as a cross-generation title. While it runs smoothly on the older PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the fast-paced, multi-enemy encounters and the atmospheric lighting of the Primordial Night heavily benefit from the horsepower of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Post-Launch Expansion

Supporting the game’s massive success (selling over 5 million units by July 2025), FromSoftware released the The Forsaken Hollows DLC in late 2025. This expansion added two completely new Nightfarers to the roster, additional “Day Three” bosses, shifting earth mechanics, and introduced a terrifying new threat: the Dreglord Straghess, a vengeful being merged from the victims of the Night.
