Where to buy
The Last of Us Part II is a critically acclaimed 2020 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is the direct sequel to The Last of Us (2013) and serves as the second main entry in the franchise. Set five years after the events of the first game, the story follows two playable protagonists—Ellie and Abby—whose lives become deeply intertwined in a brutal post-apocalyptic United States. What begins as a personal quest for revenge spirals into a complex narrative exploring themes of cycles of violence, retribution, loss, and the fragile nature of humanity amid infected hordes and warring survivor factions.
The game was rebuilt and enhanced in The Last of Us Part II Remastered, which brings improved visuals, performance, new gameplay modes, developer commentary, and additional content while preserving the original story and performances.
Gameplay
The Last of Us Part II is played from a third-person perspective and combines intense, cinematic storytelling with tense survival-action gameplay. Players switch between controlling Ellie and Abby across the campaign, using a mix of firearms, improvised melee weapons, stealth, crafting, and exploration to survive in a hostile world. Enemy encounters include both human survivors (who use smart tactics, cover, and group coordination) and evolved stages of the Cordyceps-infected (Runners, Stalkers, Clickers, Shamblers, Rat King, and more).
Key gameplay pillars include:
- Deeply reactive combat and stealth systems with fluid movement, prone crawling, and dynamic enemy AI.
- Expanded crafting and weapon customization for deeper survival tension.
- Branching exploration in large, detailed open areas (Seattle, Jackson, and beyond) filled with optional collectibles, notes, and environmental storytelling.
- The Remastered version adds the roguelike survival mode No Return, new accessibility options, improved photo mode, lost levels, and a chronological story mode (added in a 2025 update) that interleaves Ellie’s and Abby’s perspectives.
On PlayStation 5 and PC, the Remastered edition leverages advanced hardware for higher-fidelity graphics, faster load times, 3D audio, and DualSense haptic feedback (on PS5).
Development and Legacy
Directed by Neil Druckmann (who also co-wrote the story with Halley Gross), The Last of Us Part II was in development for over six years following the success of the original game and its Remastered edition. The team pushed the PlayStation 4 to its limits with groundbreaking animation, lighting, and AI systems. Motion capture and voice performances were recorded simultaneously, with Ashley Johnson returning as Ellie and Laura Bailey as Abby. Gustavo Santaolalla returned to compose the haunting score.
Originally released for PlayStation 4 on June 19, 2020, the game faced significant pre-launch hype followed by polarized discourse around its narrative choices and themes. Despite review-bombing on Metacritic, it earned widespread critical acclaim for its gameplay, audio design, character depth, and technical achievements. It became one of the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusives, sold over 10 million copies by 2022, and won more than 300 Game of the Year awards.
The Remastered edition launched on PlayStation 5 on January 19, 2024, and on Microsoft Windows (PC) via Steam and Epic Games Store on April 3, 2025 (developed in collaboration with Nixxes Software and Iron Galaxy). A digital bundle titled The Last of Us Complete (including Part I and Part II Remastered) released in April 2025, with further updates and content added throughout 2025.
