Subject 9
Subject 9 is a highly obscure 2013 indie isometric tactical shooter developed by a solo indie developer (credited as SilentDeveloper/Mishal Alam) using the Unity3D engine. Released during the early boom of the Steam Greenlight era, it is a fast-paced, arcade-style action game that blends traditional twin-stick shooting with elemental magic.
Set in a dystopian sci-fi future, the game follows the titular “Subject 9,” a biological human weapon who was genetically altered and granted superhuman abilities by a corrupt, world-dominating corporation. After breaking out of containment, Subject 9 must fight their way through heavily armed corporate military forces, desperate to escape the facility and gain their freedom.
Gameplay
Subject 9 plays from a top-down, isometric perspective and challenges players to manage both traditional firearms and a suite of magical abilities. The game was designed to be fast-paced, requiring players to constantly move and utilize the environment to survive large waves of enemies.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Elemental Powers: Instead of just relying on guns, Subject 9 can cast and control five distinct elements: Fire, Ice, Electricity, Gravity, and Vexel Energy. Each element has different status effects on enemy types (which range from standard grunts to snipers and heavy gunners).
- RPG Skill Trees: As players progress, they earn points to spend across three distinct skill trees—Weaponry, Elemental, and Defense—featuring a total of 25 different upgrades to customize their playstyle.
- Environmental Hacking: The levels are littered with interactive technological hazards. Players can hack into the environment to take control of enemy turrets, deploy force fields, activate teleporters, or commandeer mech-bots to fight alongside them.
- Survival Mode: In addition to the standard story campaign, completing levels unlocks them in Survival Mode, where players fight against endless, escalating waves of enemies to achieve high scores.
Development and Legacy
Developed by a very small indie team (and largely driven by a single developer), Subject 9 was an ambitious project for its time, attempting to mix tactical shooter mechanics with RPG progression in a 3D isometric space.
Upon its release on Steam in August 2013, the game flew almost entirely under the radar. It suffered from a lack of marketing and the general saturation of the indie PC market at the time. Due to its extreme obscurity, the game was eventually delisted and removed from the Steam store front. Today, it exists primarily as “abandonware” and a strange digital relic, though Steam activation keys for the game can still occasionally be found floating around on grey-market key reseller websites.
