Rymdkapsel is a minimalist masterpiece that strips the real-time strategy genre down to its most essential, geometric bones. Developed by Grapefrukt Games (Martin Jonasson), it asks a simple question: can you build a functioning space station using only Tetris pieces and a handful of dedicated white blocks?

The game is famously “meditative until it isn’t,” blending Zen-like construction with the sudden, frantic anxiety of defending your geometric utopia from encroaching red triangles.

The Architecture of the Void

Construction in Rymdkapsel is a literal puzzle. Instead of traditional base-building, you are given a random sequence of Tetris-style “polyomino” shapes to place.

  • Corridors and Rooms: You must link together specific rooms—reactors for energy, gardens and kitchens for food, and factories for materials—to keep your station growing.
  • Spatial Efficiency: Because space is limited and travel time matters, the layout of your station determines your success. If your minions have to walk three Tetris blocks just to turn a plant into a meal, your economy will collapse under its own weight.

Minion Management

Your workforce consists of small, white rectangles. They are entirely autonomous, but you dictate their priorities through a simple “drag-and-drop” task bar at the bottom of the screen.

  • Task Assignment: You can shift your entire workforce from “Construction” to “Defense” or “Research” in a single swipe.
  • The Travel Time Trap: Minions are slow. A major part of the strategy involves predicting when the next enemy wave will arrive so you can get your workers to the weapons platforms before they are picked off in the corridors.

The Monoliths and the Waves

The game’s overarching goal is exploration. Scattered throughout the void are four ancient Monoliths.

  • Research Perks: Sending minions to research these monoliths unlocks permanent buffs, such as increased minion speed or improved weapons range.
  • Escalating Threat: As you play, a red bar at the bottom of the screen slowly fills. When it hits the end, waves of flying red triangles attack. These waves grow exponentially in size and frequency, turning your peaceful building session into a desperate struggle for survival.

Summary

Rymdkapsel is a masterclass in “less is more.” It removes the clutter of high-fidelity graphics and complex tech trees to focus on the pure satisfaction of spatial optimization and resource management. It is a game about finding order in a cold, dark universe, one L-shaped corridor at a time.

“It’s the only game where you’ll find yourself emotionally attached to a 2×1 white rectangle because it’s the only thing standing between your energy reactor and a very angry red triangle.”
