Endless Space 2 is a turn-based science-fiction space grand strategy 4X video game developed by Amplitude Studios and published by Sega. Following a successful Early Access period, the game officially launched on May 18, 2017, for Microsoft Windows and macOS. As the direct sequel to 2012’s Endless Space, it expands the “Endless” universe by introducing unprecedented narrative depth, an intricate domestic political engine, and heavily stylized presentation.

The game tasks players with guiding a starfaring empire across a procedurally generated galaxy. Victory can be achieved through multiple vectors, including economic dominance, diplomatic alliances, scientific supremacy, or military conquest.

The Academy and Galactic Lore

The narrative continues to explore the cosmic vacuum left by the Endless, an ancient precursor race. However, Endless Space 2 shifts a massive portion of its macro-narrative focus to The Academy. Led by a rogue Heretic named Isyander, the Academy operates as a powerful, non-aligned galactic entity dedicated to uncovering the secrets of the Endless and controlling the flow of Dust.

Throughout a match, the Academy acts as a dynamic quest giver and neutral ground. Players can send heroes to study at the Academy, compete in global quests to fund Isyander’s ambitions, or actively wage war against the institution to prevent a galaxy-altering awakening.

The Political Engine and Population Demographics

The defining mechanical overhaul of Endless Space 2 is its Dynamic Senate and Population System. Empires are no longer ideologically monolithic; instead, individual planetary populations possess distinct political alignments divided into six factions:

  • Industrialists: Driven by production, manufacturing, and structural expansion.
  • Scientists: Focused on academic optimization and technological breakthroughs.
  • Pacifists: Centered on trade growth, diplomatic treaties, and luxury resource development.
  • Militarists: Focused on fleet production, defensive fortifications, and aggressive expansion.
  • Ecologists: Dedicated to terraforming, food production, and agricultural colonization.
  • Religious: Centered on ideological control, population stability, and status-quo preservation.

As you explore the galaxy, absorb alien minorities, or experience random narrative events, your empire’s demographic makeup changes. Every few turns, elections are held to determine the composition of your Senate. The ruling political parties dictate which specialized Laws you can legally pass.

Forcing a pacifist populace into a prolonged war will spike approval penalties, trigger massive labor strikes, and can ultimately lead to a domestic revolution that forcefully overthrows your chosen form of government (switching your empire between a Democracy, Republic, Federation, or Dictatorship).

Radical Faction Design

Amplitude Studios pushed asymmetric faction mechanics even further than in the original title, giving new civilizations completely rule-breaking loops:

  • The Vodyani: A highly religious faction of digitized vampires who live exclusively on massive, mobile Ark ships. They do not colonize planets traditionally; instead, they anchor their Arks to star systems to exploit all planets concurrently and use specialized fleets to harvest the “Essence” of rival populations.
  • The Riftborn: Beings pulled from an alternate, geometric dimension who view organic life as a corrupt plague. They do not grow their population over time; instead, they must spend raw industry points to physically construct new citizens in factory assembly lines. They can also cast strategic spells to manipulate the flow of time across local star systems.
  • The Horatio: A faction founded by an eccentric, hyper-wealthy eccentric billionaire who cloned himself trillions of times to populate an entire empire. Their unique mechanic involves hunting down minor alien factions across the galaxy to splice their genetic traits directly into the Horatio DNA template, permanently upgrading the attributes of their entire population pool.
  • The Lumeris: A highly organized society of amphibious mafia families. The Lumeris completely bypass colonizer ships; instead, they spend Dust to instantly purchase colonization rights to planets, which they can then exploit domestically or flip to other empires for a financial profit.

Flotilla-Based Cinematic Combat

Space combat leaves behind the strict rock-paper-scissors card system of the original game to implement a Flotilla Battle Plan Network. Before a space battle commences, the player reviews the composition of the enemy fleet and chooses a holistic tactical playbook (such as “Turtle,” “Get Lucky,” or “Cross Waves”).

Thechosen playbook divides your grand fleet into three independent lanes or Flotillas (Left, Center, and Right) and dictates their specific flight trajectories, optimal weapon ranges, and passive defense multipliers.

Once the strategy is locked, the battle plays out in a real-time, cinematic 3D viewer. Success relies on how well your ship design matches your chosen playbook—ensuring that long-range missile cruisers maintain distance while kinetic brawlers successfully charge into close-quarters corridors.

Expansion History and Current Status

Throughout its post-launch lifecycle, Endless Space 2 received several major expansions that introduced new playable factions, strategic mechanics, and environmental threats:

  • Vaulter (2018): Re-introduced the beloved, portal-hopping human faction from Endless Legend, bringing teleportation networks and heavy defensive armaments.
  • Supremacy (2018): Added the honor-bound Hissho faction alongside massive, system-destroying Behemoth class capital ships.
  • Penumbra (2019): Introduced the stealth-focused Umbral Choir faction, introducing deep-space hacking networks, cloaking devices, and invisible sanctuaries.
  • Awakening (2019): Added the Nakalim faction and allowed players to interact directly with the Academy as a tangible galactic superpower.

As of 2026, Endless Space 2 stands as a definitive, highly polished milestone of the modern 4X genre. The game is stably preserved on Steam as a complete experience, functioning smoothly out-of-the-box on modern 64-bit Windows 11 architectures with full native scaling for high-resolution monitors. Backed by a vast library of Steam Workshop total conversion mods and community balance updates, it remains a premier destination for players seeking deeply immersive, narrative-driven space grand strategy.
