Rise of the Triad: Dark War
Rise of the Triad: Dark War is a 1994 first-person shooter developed and published by Apogee Software. Released on December 21, 1994, for PC (MS-DOS), it was originally conceived as an official sequel to Wolfenstein 3D before pivoting into its own wildly eccentric, ultra-violent IP. Running on a heavily modified version of the Wolfenstein 3D engine, the developers pushed the outdated tech to its absolute limits, introducing simulated verticality, chaotic multiplayer, and an arsenal of absurdly destructive weaponry.
Core Story
Set on the remote San Nicolas Island off the coast of California, you take control of a member of the H.U.N.T. (High-risk United Nations Task-force) elite special ops team. Sent to investigate suspicious cult activity, the team discovers a massive, heavily armed terrorist organization led by the maniacal cult leader, El Oscuro. When the team’s insertion boat is blown to pieces, they are left stranded and hopelessly outnumbered. To survive, they must infiltrate the deadly ancient monastery, battle through legions of fanatical cultists and deadly traps, and stop El Oscuro from launching a devastating global attack.
Gameplay and Features
ROTT is famous for throwing out the rulebook of standard 90s shooters, prioritizing explosive chaos and bizarre power-ups over grounded level design:
- Five Playable Characters: Players can choose from five distinct H.U.N.T. operatives (such as Taradino Cassatt, Thi Barrett, or Ian Paul Freeley), each with unique stats for speed, health, and accuracy.
- Insane Arsenal: The game is legendary for its missile weapons and magical items. Alongside dual-wielded pistols and MP40s, you will unleash the Drunk Missile (which fires a swarm of erratic rockets), the Flamewall (which sends a tidal wave of fire across the floor), and the Excalibat (a magical baseball bat that fires exploding baseballs).
- Engine Wizardry: Despite using a flat, grid-based engine, Apogee added verticality using spring-loaded jump pads, floating hovercraft platforms, and the ability to look up and down.
- Wild Power-Ups: The game features hilarious temporary transformations. “God Mode” turns you into a towering, invincible deity shooting energy blasts from your hand; “Dog Mode” turns you into an invincible, biting canine; and “Shrooms Mode” acts as a power-down, severely distorting your vision and making enemies glow brightly.
- Ludicrous Gibs!: ROTT cranked up the gore to comical levels. Hitting an enemy with an explosive weapon often results in the iconic “Ludicrous Gibs!” notification flashing on-screen as eyeballs and limbs fly past the camera.
- Comm-Bat Multiplayer: It featured an incredibly robust 11-player multiplayer mode over LAN, complete with varied game types like Capture the Triad, Hunter, and voice taunts.
PC Version
Originally a demanding MS-DOS classic, the PC version was known for slowing down 90s hardware due to the sheer amount of explosions and flying debris on screen. While it ran fine via DOSBox for years, the definitive way to play it today is the Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition, released in 2023 by Nightdive Studios. This stunning remaster runs on the KEX Engine, offering native 4K, uncapped framerates, restored cut content, an entirely new episode, and full online multiplayer.
Console Versions
During the 1990s, Rise of the Triad never received a home console port, remaining a pure PC-exclusive experience. However, thanks to the 2023 release of the Ludicrous Edition, the game is now readily available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. These modern console releases feature buttery-smooth performance, modernized twin-stick controls, gyro aiming on supported platforms, and cross-play multiplayer.
Quick Note
Rise of the Triad: Dark War is the chaotic, unhinged punk-rock cousin of Doom. It didn’t take itself seriously for a single second, opting instead to deliver explosive fun, ridiculous speed, and memorable level design.
In short: If you want to bounce off a jump pad, turn into an invincible dog, and obliterate a room full of cultists with a magical baseball bat, this 90s classic remains an absolute must-play.
