MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is a 2019 vehicle simulation game developed by Piranha Games. Released initially on December 10, 2019, for PC, it ended a massive 17-year drought for mainline, single-player MechWarrior titles. Built on Unreal Engine 4, the game takes the robust, weighty mech combat established in the developer’s multiplayer-only MechWarrior Online and injects it into a massive, galaxy-spanning sandbox of mercenary management, political warfare, and destructible environments.
Core Story
Set in the year 3015, during the brutal waning years of the Third Succession War, you play as Commander Mason, the young heir to a small, independent mercenary outfit known as Nik’s Cavaliers. The game opens with a sudden, devastating ambush by a mysterious mercenary company called Black Inferno. Your father sacrifices himself in his Victor to ensure your escape, leaving the company in ruins.
Guided by your operations officer, Ryana Campbell, and your chief mechanic, Fahad, you are forced to flee into the depths of the Inner Sphere. You must slowly rebuild your fractured company from the ground up, taking contracts from the Great Houses to earn C-Bills, salvage new mechs, and build your reputation. Over the course of several in-game decades (progressing up to the year 3049, right before the Clan Invasion), you wage a relentless campaign of revenge to hunt down Black Inferno and uncover the massive corporate conspiracy that funded your father’s murder.
Gameplay and Features
MechWarrior 5 returns to the beloved management structure of the 1996 classic, blending heavy simulation combat with the gritty reality of running a PMC:
- Four-Player Co-op: A massive selling point for the game. At any time, you can invite up to three friends to seamlessly drop into your campaign, taking the place of your AI lancemates. There is nothing quite like executing a coordinated, four-man ambush on an enemy DropShip with your real-life friends.
- The Mercenary Economy: Running a DropShip is incredibly expensive. You must negotiate contracts before every mission, deciding whether to ask for higher hazard pay, more salvage shares, or better damage insurance. You have to pay for jump-ship travel across star systems, and repairing a critically damaged mech can take weeks of in-game time and millions of C-Bills.
- Destructible Environments: The Unreal Engine 4 physics allow for incredibly satisfying destruction. You can casually walk your 100-ton Atlas completely through a concrete office building, crush trees under your metallic feet, and level entire enemy bases by walking over their walls.
- Procedural Generation: To simulate a never-ending mercenary career, the vast majority of standard contracts (Assassination, Defense, Raid, Warzone) take place on procedurally generated maps. These are balanced by specific, handcrafted “High Reward” and Campaign missions.
- Weighty Combat: The simulation mechanics feel deliberately heavy and grounded. Heat management, torso twisting, and localized armor damage are as critical as ever, but the game is slightly more forgiving than the ultra-hardcore MechWarrior 3, leaning into a highly accessible “arcade-sim” sweet spot.
PC Version
Initially launching as a timed exclusive on the Epic Games Store, MechWarrior 5 eventually made its way to Steam and GOG in 2021. The PC is undeniably the definitive place to play, entirely due to its massive, incredibly active modding community.
Because the vanilla game uses a somewhat simplified MechLab (restricting engine swaps and hardpoint sizes), the community created the legendary YAML (Yet Another Mechlab) mod. This completely overhauls the game, returning the deep, tabletop-accurate customization of previous games, adding hundreds of new mechs, weapons, and Clan-era tech that drastically expands the lifespan and depth of the game. The PC version also features native support for DLSS and ray tracing.
Console Versions
In a massive milestone for the franchise, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries marked the mainline series’ triumphant return to home consoles after nearly two decades. In 2021, the game launched on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
Piranha Games did a fantastic job translating the complex, multi-input simulation controls to standard gamepads. Crucially, the console versions support full cross-play, meaning PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players can easily squad up and run co-op mercenary contracts together regardless of their hardware.
Quick Note
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is a brilliant return to form that perfectly captures the blue-collar, working-class fantasy of being a gigantic robot pilot struggling to pay the bills in the 31st century.
In short: If you have three friends, a lance of heavily armed battlemechs, and a burning desire to flatten an entire city block just to assassinate a single political target, this game offers an unparalleled modern BattleTech experience.
