MechWarrior 2: BattlePack
MechWarrior 2: BattlePack is a 1997 PC compilation developed and published by Activision. Serving as a definitive, upgraded release of the legendary mech-simulation series, it bundled the original 1995 masterpiece MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, its massive expansion MechWarrior 2: Ghost Bear’s Legacy, and the multiplayer client NetMech into a single, cohesive package. Crucially, this release ported the older games onto the more advanced game engine used by MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, offering significant technical and graphical improvements over the original MS-DOS releases.
Core Story
Because the BattlePack includes both the base game and its expansion, it covers two distinct, massive conflicts within the BattleTech universe:
- 31st Century Combat: Set during the ideological civil war known as the “Refusal War” in 3057, players step into the cockpit as a genetically engineered MechWarrior. You choose a side—either the warden-minded Clan Wolf or the aggressive, crusader-minded Clan Jade Falcon—and fight across multiple planets to decide the political future of the Clans.
- Ghost Bear’s Legacy: Set shortly after the Refusal War, you play as a warrior of Clan Ghost Bear. When an unknown faction suddenly attacks your homeworld and steals the sacred genetic material of your clan’s founders, you embark on a brutal, galaxy-spanning crusade of vengeance to recover it, eventually uncovering a conspiracy involving the draconian Word of Blake.
Gameplay and Features
The compilation maintains the complex, high-stakes simulation gameplay of the originals while combining their best features:
- Engine Upgrades: This was the major selling point of the BattlePack. By porting the games to the newer Mercenaries engine, the previously flat-shaded polygon environments of the base game were upgraded with texture mapping, superior lighting, and smoother framerates.
- Massive Mech Roster: By combining the base game and the expansion, players have access to a massive garage of highly customizable OmniMechs. This includes iconic base mechs like the Timber Wolf (Mad Cat) and the 14 additional mechs introduced in Ghost Bear’s Legacy, such as the terrifying, heavily armored Kodiak and the classic Inner Sphere Atlas.
- New Environments: The inclusion of the expansion means players must contend with new environmental hazards, most notably underwater missions. Fighting underwater drastically changes the simulation’s heat management (cooling you down much faster) but severely limits the effectiveness and range of ballistic weapons and lasers.
- Integrated NetMech: The compilation fully integrated NetMech, allowing players to easily jump into 8-player deathmatches and team battles over LAN or dial-up internet using the expanded roster of mechs and the upgraded engine.
PC Version
The BattlePack was released exclusively for Windows 95, completely removing the need for players to configure complex DOS memory environments. It served as a bridge between the software-rendered early days of MW2 and the later Titanium Trilogy (which added full 3D hardware acceleration for 3dfx cards). Today, running the native 1997 Windows 95 executable on modern 64-bit operating systems is incredibly difficult. However, the retro BattleTech community keeps these specific versions alive through customized installers and emulation tools like MechVM, which allow the BattlePack data files to run smoothly on modern hardware.
Console Versions
While the base game MechWarrior 2 was heavily modified and ported to the PlayStation and Sega Saturn in 1997, the MechWarrior 2: BattlePack compilation, its specific engine upgrades, and the Ghost Bear’s Legacy expansion were strictly PC exclusives and never received official console ports.
Quick Note
MechWarrior 2: BattlePack represents the ultimate 1990s Clan experience. It took an already legendary simulation, packed it with a fantastic expansion, and modernized the underlying tech to keep the lasers firing smoothly.
In short: If you want to experience the complete, definitive storyline of the Clan era with a massive roster of heavily armed walking tanks and upgraded textures, this specific bundle remains an incredible, highly sought-after piece of BattleTech history.
