Knights of Honor II: Sovereign is a 2022 real-time grand strategy game developed by Black Sea Games and published by THQ Nordic. Releasing a staggering 18 years after the original 2004 cult classic, the game is a passionate, highly faithful revival of the franchise. It successfully recaptures the highly specific niche of the original: acting as the perfect, accessible middle ground between the dense, spreadsheet-heavy grand strategy of Paradox’s Crusader Kings and the tactical, real-time army brawls of Creative Assembly’s Total War.

The premise remains beautifully open-ended. You take control of any of the 200+ historical kingdoms, duchies, or sultanates across Medieval Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Choosing from three distinct starting eras, your ultimate goal is to become the undisputed Sovereign of Europe—either by painting the map with your armies, dominating the global economy, or achieving a peaceful diplomatic victory.

Gameplay

Sovereign retains the core identity of the original game, meaning the grand strategy layer operates entirely in real-time rather than turn-based, keeping the pressure high as you manage your sprawling empire.

Key gameplay mechanics include:

  • The Royal Court: Just like the 2004 original, your empire is managed through your Royal Court. You have a limited number of slots to hire specific Knights to run your kingdom:
    • Marshals: Lead your armies and conquer territories.
    • Merchants: Establish lucrative trade agreements with neighbors to boost your economy.
    • Diplomats: Form defensive pacts, arrange royal marriages, and prevent massive coalitions from forming against you.
    • Clerics: Manage your kingdom’s piety, adopt new religions, and influence the Pope.
    • Spies: Infiltrate rival courts to bribe officials, incite rebellions, or assassinate enemy kings.
  • Accessible Province Management: Instead of managing hundreds of individual building queues, cities function as regional hubs. You build structures (like barracks, markets, or farms) in the capital city of a province, which then unlocks specific units, resources, and passive buffs for that entire region.
  • Real-Time Tactical Battles: When armies clash on the world map, you can choose to auto-resolve or dive into a 3D tactical battle. These battles are heavily reminiscent of old-school RTS games, allowing you to command squads of archers, cavalry, and infantry to flank the enemy, capture their encampments, or rout their general.
  • Dynasty and Religion: You must manage your royal family line to ensure a smooth succession, as the death of a king without an heir can plunge your kingdom into a chaotic civil war. You also have to navigate the complex religious landscape of the era, dealing with Catholic Crusades, Orthodox patriarchs, or Islamic Jihads.
  • Multiplayer: A massive upgrade from the original game, Sovereign features robust online multiplayer. Up to 6 players can compete for European dominance in various game modes, ranging from free-for-all conquests to specific economic victory races.

Development and Legacy

The development of Knights of Honor II: Sovereign is a fantastic full-circle story in the gaming industry. Vesselin Handjiev, the original director of the 2004 Knights of Honor, eventually left the corporate umbrella of Crytek/Creative Assembly to found his own independent studio, Black Sea Games. His team’s primary goal was to finally deliver the sequel that fans had been begging for for nearly two decades.

Upon its release in December 2022, Sovereign was met with warm, positive reception. Critics and veteran fans praised the game for exactly what it set out to be: an approachable, highly engaging grand strategy game that didn’t require hundreds of hours of watching YouTube tutorials just to understand the UI. It successfully translated the charming 2D isometric art of the original into a clean, modern 3D engine.

While hardcore grand strategy veterans noted that the tactical RTS battles were a bit too simplistic compared to modern Total War games, and the late-game economy could snowball relatively easily, Sovereign was widely celebrated as a triumphant return. It stands as a brilliant entry point for players looking to dip their toes into the grand strategy genre without drowning in overwhelming complexity.
