Homefront is a 2011 first-person shooter developed by Kaos Studios and published by THQ. Released on March 15, 2011 (NA) for PC (Windows), PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, it was one of the last major titles from Kaos before the studio’s closure. The game is set in a chilling near-future alternate history where a reunified Greater Korean Republic has occupied the Western United States after a global economic collapse. It blends a cinematic single-player campaign with large-scale multiplayer, drawing inspiration from Kaos’s earlier Frontlines: Fuel of War. While the campaign’s short length drew criticism, the atmospheric storytelling and intense resistance-fighting theme earned it a dedicated cult following.

Core Story

In 2027, the United States has been devastated by oil shortages, economic meltdown, and internal strife. A powerful Greater Korean Republic exploits the chaos, launching a surprise invasion and occupying the West Coast. You play as Robert Jacobs, a former U.S. Army pilot living in occupied Montrose, Colorado. After Korean forces execute your neighbors in a brutal public display, Jacobs joins the American Resistance. Guided by hardened fighters like Connor, Rianna, and Boone, you fight to spark a revolution and reclaim American soil. The narrative—penned by John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Red Dawn)—mixes gritty realism, propaganda broadcasts, and emotional civilian resistance moments in a plausible dystopian America.

Gameplay and Features

Homefront follows a linear, story-driven campaign with classic FPS mechanics:

  • Campaign: Seven missions focused on guerrilla tactics, set-piece moments, and squad-based objectives across suburban streets, rural compounds, and occupied cities. Emphasis on emotional storytelling, civilian hardship, and rising tension rather than endless set pieces.
  • Weapons & Combat: Familiar arsenal (assault rifles, SMGs, sniper rifles) with satisfying gunplay, grenades, and occasional vehicle sections. AI is competent but criticized for grenade spam and scripted paths.
  • Multiplayer: Large-scale 32-player battles with vehicle combat, capture-the-flag style modes, and ground/air support—praised as the game’s strongest feature and a spiritual successor to Frontlines: Fuel of War.
  • Atmosphere: Propaganda-filled world, dynamic weather, and immersive audio create a believable occupied America.

Single-player is offline-only and lasts roughly 5–7 hours (one of the main criticisms). Multiplayer offers endless replayability but saw console servers shut down after THQ’s 2013 bankruptcy (PC multiplayer remains playable via Steam).

PC Version (2011)

The PC edition (now on Steam) is the most accessible way to play today. It supports higher resolutions, FOV adjustments, keyboard & mouse precision, and basic graphics tweaks. The game runs smoothly on very modest modern hardware (original minimum specs were Windows XP-era with a dual-core CPU and 2 GB RAM). It’s frequently on deep discount (often 90% off) and includes the full campaign plus multiplayer. No official remaster or next-gen patch exists, but community fixes keep it running well in 2026. Ideal for players wanting sharp controls and easy mod-like settings tweaks.

Console Versions (PS3 & Xbox 360)

  • PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360 (2011): Solid ports with controller-friendly gameplay and split-screen options in some modes. The campaign feels cinematic on a big TV. Multiplayer servers were shut down years ago, so online play is no longer available on consoles. Both versions are backward-compatible on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with improved loading and upscaling for a cleaner experience on modern hardware.

No official Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 version exists (or has ever been announced) as of April 2026. The game remains a last-generation title with no modern ports beyond backward compatibility.

Quick Comparison

  • PC → Best for precision controls, higher resolutions, and ongoing multiplayer—still the definitive way to experience the campaign and any remaining online action.
  • PS5 / Xbox Series X|S (via backward compatibility) → Great for couch play and big-screen immersion if you prefer controllers.
  • Original PS3 / Xbox 360 → Pure nostalgia but limited to offline campaign only.

Homefront stands as a bold, thought-provoking near-future shooter that dared to put players in the shoes of an American resistance fighter. While short and linear, its immersive world and timely themes still resonate more than a decade later—especially on PC. “In occupied America… freedom isn’t given. It’s taken back.”
