Directive 8020
Directive 8020 is an upcoming cinematic sci-fi survival horror game developed by Supermassive Games. Serving as the highly anticipated premiere of Season Two of The Dark Pictures Anthology, the game is scheduled to launch on May 12, 2026. Taking heavy inspiration from classic sci-fi body horror like John Carpenter’s The Thing and Ridley Scott’s Alien, it represents a massive mechanical evolution for the franchise, transitioning from a purely interactive drama into a more traditional survival horror experience.
The story is set 12 lightyears from a dying Earth. Aboard the colony ship Cassiopeia, a crew crash-lands on the planet Tau Ceti f, representing humanity’s last hope for survival. Led by the groundbreaking astronaut “Young” (portrayed by Hollywood actress Lashana Lynch), the crew quickly realizes they are not alone. They are hunted by a terrifying alien organism capable of perfectly mimicking its prey. As paranoia sets in and trust completely dissolves, the crew must outwit their shapeshifting pursuer to make it home alive—even if it means risking the lives of everyone on Earth.
Gameplay
Built from the ground up on Unreal Engine 5, Directive 8020 completely overhauls the standard formula of The Dark Pictures Anthology.
Key gameplay mechanics and additions include:
- Real-Time Survival Horror: Moving away from the static camera angles and pure point-and-click exploration of past games, players now have full analog control (including strafing, crouching, and sprinting) with a free 3D camera.
- Stealth and Evasion: For the first time in the series, players must actively hide from threats. You must crouch-walk through dark corridors, avoid using your flashlight, and utilize environmental distractions to bypass the alien threat in real time.
- The Utility Strap: Characters are equipped with a multi-functional toolset that includes a shoulder-mounted flashlight, a scanner (to check electronics or spot the alien), a wedge tool for prying doors or stunning enemies, and a remote hacking device.
- Comms Paranoia: Players can use a text messenger to communicate with other separated crew members. However, because the alien is a perfect shapeshifter, you are never entirely sure if the person texting you back is actually human.
- Turning Points: A massive new quality-of-life feature. If you make a disastrous mistake, the “Turning Points” system acts as a rewind feature (similar to Life is Strange), allowing you to jump back to key narrative branches to rewrite your destiny and save crew members from permanent death.
- Movie Night Co-Op: The series’ beloved “couch co-op” returns at launch, allowing up to five players to pass the controller around the room, each taking responsibility for a different crew member’s survival. Online multiplayer is slated as a free post-launch update.
Development and Legacy
Following the conclusion of Season One of The Dark Pictures Anthology (which ended with The Devil in Me), Supermassive Games wanted to make a monumental leap forward in ambition and technology. Directive 8020 marks the franchise’s full transition to current-generation consoles, completely abandoning the PS4 and Xbox One to utilize the power of Unreal Engine 5.
With press previews dropping in late April 2026, critics have praised the game’s claustrophobic atmosphere, Lashana Lynch’s gripping motion-capture performance, and the sheer terror of the paranoia-inducing communication mechanics. However, the true test for Supermassive will be how successfully they implement traditional stealth-action mechanics, a genre they haven’t heavily explored since their founding.
As an accessibility measure, Supermassive also introduced highly granular difficulty settings, allowing players to tweak the intensity of the real-time threats or even turn off permanent deaths entirely, ensuring that both hardcore survival horror fans and casual interactive movie fans can enjoy the deep space nightmare.
