Blood West
Where to buy
Blood West is an immersive stealth first-person shooter developed by Hyperstrange and published by indie powerhouse New Blood Interactive. Blending classic Thief-style stealth mechanics with the bleak, survival-horror atmosphere of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and the gritty aesthetic of Hunt: Showdown, the game is set in a twisted, nightmarish version of the Wild West where eldritch horrors and demonic corruption have taken over the frontier.
The story follows the Undead Gunslinger—a man brought back to life by strange native spirits. Doomed to roam the barren lands, he must hunt down the supernatural forces that have corrupted the frontier in order to purge his curse, free his soul, and earn the right to finally move on. Across three massive, open-ended episodes (The Canyons, The Swamp, and The Mountains), players must navigate a hostile, non-linear world filled with ghouls, Wendigos, and twisted monsters.
Gameplay
Blood West is deeply rooted in the classic “boomer shooter” and immersive sim genres, heavily rewarding patience, observation, and careful planning over mindless run-and-gun action.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Classic Stealth: The game emphasizes a slow, methodical approach. Players must crouch through the shadows, monitor enemy patrol routes, and strike silently. Alerting a camp of monsters can quickly lead to a gruesome, rapid death.
- Non-Linear Exploration: The three massive hub maps are completely open. The game does not hold your hand or provide glowing objective markers. Players must rely on purchased maps, environmental clues, and exploration to find secrets, hidden stashes, and optimal routes to their objectives.
- RPG Progression: The game features a robust, perk-based skill tree. Earning experience allows players to heavily customize their playstyle, whether they want to become a silent phantom with a bow, a gunslinging sniper, or a heavily armored berserker.
- Inventory Management: Scavenging is crucial. Players manage a grid-based inventory, hoarding bandages, medical tinctures, and arcane artifacts that can be slotted into the Gunslinger to grant unique passive abilities.
- The Arsenal: You have access to a massive variety of period-appropriate weaponry—including double-barreled shotguns, lever-action rifles, revolvers, and hunting bows—many of which can be found infused with dark magic or possessed by spirits.
- The Curse System: Dying in Blood West has consequences. Instead of a simple “game over,” death results in a “Flaw” (a curse) being placed upon the player, which negatively impacts their stats. To remove the debuff, players must complete a specific, challenging task to cleanse themselves.
Development and Legacy
Hyperstrange (known for the chaotic POSTAL: Brain Damaged) released Blood West into Steam Early Access in February 2022. It spent nearly two years gestating, constantly receiving updates and expanding its maps based heavily on community feedback, before launching its 1.0 version in December 2023 to highly positive reviews.
A massive selling point for fans of the immersive sim genre was the casting of the protagonist. The Undead Gunslinger is voiced by legendary voice actor Stephen Russell, most famous for providing the iconic voice of Garrett in the classic Thief trilogy, perfectly cementing the game’s lineage as a true stealth experience.
Following its successful PC run, the game officially made the jump to current-generation consoles in October 2025. It also received a major story expansion DLC in late 2024 titled Dead Man’s Promise, which introduced a new playable protagonist (The Shaman), magical staves, and the ability to summon minions, further expanding the weird-west lore.
Key Features:
- Weird West Horror — Explore a twisted, low-poly frontier where classic Wild West tropes collide with terrifying eldritch monsters and demonic cults.
