The Witcher 4 Targeting 2028 Release, CD Projekt Confirms
CD Projekt has given fans the clearest timeline yet for The Witcher 4, with co-CEO Michał Nowakowski announcing ahead of Gamescom that the studio is targeting a 2028 release window for its most ambitious project to date.
The Announcement
In a video message shared before this year’s Gamescom, Nowakowski addressed the release date question that has been circulating among fans since the game was revealed. PC Gamer reports that Nowakowski stated directly: “The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window.” He followed that up with a message to fans: “I know it’s a bit of a wait, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait.”
The word “targeting” is doing a lot of work in that statement. As Eurogamer notes, it leaves CD Projekt room to maneuver if development runs longer than planned, a lesson the studio learned the hard way with the delay-heavy launches of both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.
What CD Projekt Said About the Game
Beyond the release window, Nowakowski offered a broad description of what players can expect. According to GamesRadar, he described The Witcher 4 as featuring “a huge and immersive open world, intense and action-packed gameplay, and a deep impactful story” that the studio hopes will leave a lasting impression. He called it the studio’s “biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.”
Nowakowski also confirmed that more than 500 developers are currently working on the project, signaling the scale of investment CD Projekt is putting behind the title.
A Rare Development Update
As Video Games Chronicle points out, CD Projekt has been relatively quiet about The Witcher 4’s progress, making this a notable moment of transparency for the studio. The announcement came alongside a mention of an upcoming Witcher 3 expansion, suggesting CD Projekt plans to keep the broader Witcher franchise active while the sequel is in development.
With 2028 as the target, players are looking at a minimum wait of roughly two years from now. Whether the studio can hold that window remains to be seen, but for a game of this scope, a firm-ish date on the horizon is at least something fans can point to.
