Witcher 3 ‘Family Matters’ Writer Returns to CD Projekt Red
Karolina Stachyra, the writer behind The Witcher 3’s celebrated ‘Family Matters’ questline, has rejoined CD Projekt Red after spending roughly a decade at other studios. CD Projekt confirmed her return, though the company declined to share details about what she is currently working on.
A Quiet Return That Did Not Stay Quiet
According to PC Gamer, Stachyra’s LinkedIn profile shows she began freelance consulting work with CD Projekt in February before transitioning back to a full-time writing role in August. The return went largely unnoticed until a user named b0ysbrokenheart flagged it on X over the weekend, at which point the news spread quickly through RPG communities.
In between her two stints at CD Projekt, Stachyra held narrative director roles at Techland and GSC Game World, building a resume that spans some of the more demanding story-driven projects in the European games industry.
Why ‘Family Matters’ Still Resonates
Stachyra wrote the dialog and cutscenes for ‘Family Matters,’ a multi-part questline in The Witcher 3 that begins as a routine missing persons investigation for Geralt and steadily unravels into something far darker. The story centers on the Bloody Baron, a conflicted and deeply tragic character whose arc confronts alcoholism and domestic abuse without softening either subject. Stachyra also contributed writing to the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions, per PC Gamer.
The questline has remained a benchmark for narrative design in open-world RPGs since the game launched in 2015, frequently cited by players and critics as the single best example of what the game could do at its peak.
Speculation Points Toward The Witcher 4
CD Projekt has not confirmed which project Stachyra is attached to, but the timing invites obvious speculation. As GamesRadar notes, her return comes as CD Projekt is actively developing The Witcher 4, which will star Ciri as the lead character. Ciri played a meaningful role in ‘Family Matters’ itself, functioning as a surrogate daughter figure to the Bloody Baron and adding emotional weight to his storyline. Whether that history carries forward in any way remains to be seen, but Stachyra’s deep familiarity with those characters gives her a strong foundation to build from.
For RPG fans, the reunion is welcome news regardless of the specific assignment. Few writers in the industry have a single quest as well-regarded as ‘Family Matters’ on their record, and having that voice back inside CD Projekt at this stage of The Witcher 4’s development is an encouraging sign.
