Crytek is shedding staff again, this time across its Frankfurt headquarters and its Istanbul office, in a new wave of cuts that follows a round of approximately 60 departures recorded in February 2025. The latest reduction is estimated to affect at least 30 additional employees, and it raises serious questions about whether Crysis 4 will ever reach players.

What Was Cut and Where

According to Gamekult, the Istanbul studio has lost its entire quality assurance division, which has been shut down outright. At the Frankfurt office, the layoffs focused on testing teams, social media and communications staff, and the publishing branch. Crytek has not issued any official statement on the matter.

The company has now shed well over 90 positions within roughly a year and a half. A previous restructuring 18 months ago already removed 15 percent of the company’s total workforce.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 Keeps the Lights On, Barely

The timing is notable because Hunt: Showdown 1896, Crytek’s extraction shooter set in a monster-hunting bayou, is not struggling by typical industry standards. SteamDB data cited by Gamekult shows the game consistently holding around 25,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. The problem appears to be that revenue from that game is no longer sufficient to fund the studio’s broader ambitions, including any work on its next major single-player franchise entry.

Crysis 4 Looks Further Away Than Ever

Crytek’s own website still lists Crysis 4 as a project in active development, but the operational reality contradicts that label. As Gamekult reports, Crytek management acknowledged during the February 2025 layoffs that production on Crysis 4 had been frozen at the end of 2024, with developers reassigned to support and maintenance work on Hunt: Showdown 1896. Losing additional technical and editorial staff now only deepens the uncertainty around a sequel that was already on life support.

Event Approximate Headcount Affected Timing
First major restructuring 15% of total workforce ~18 months before current cuts
Second wave of layoffs ~60 employees February 2025
Current layoffs (Germany and Turkey) ~30+ employees 2025 (recent)

With QA gone in Istanbul, publishing and communications trimmed in Frankfurt, and Crysis 4 development frozen since late 2024, Crytek is operating in an increasingly narrow lane. Hunt: Showdown 1896 remains the studio’s only active product keeping revenue flowing, and for now, that appears to be both the lifeline and the ceiling.
