Bungie Outlines Major Changes Coming to Marathon

Bungie has laid out an ambitious roadmap for Marathon, signaling a fundamental shift in direction for the struggling live service shooter. The studio says the game will be “growing beyond extraction,” with new modes, a redesigned zone, a brand-new social hub, and a fresh shell all confirmed as part of the plan.

From Extraction Shooter to Something Broader

When Marathon launched, it was positioned as a cutthroat PvEvP extraction experience. That identity is now being deliberately expanded. As Rock Paper Shotgun reports, Bungie acknowledged in a new blog post that the studio wants to “preserve that thrill” for dedicated extraction fans while building additional pathways for players who want a different level of commitment or challenge. PC Gamer notes that Bungie has effectively conceded the game did not succeed in bringing extraction gameplay to a mainstream audience, which is a driving force behind the pivot.

Two notable mode additions are in the works. A permanent PvE mode is arriving as part of the next major update, called Symbiosis, which was recently delayed. Alongside it, Bungie is introducing an experimental Team Deathmatch mode described as a lower-stakes option for players to sharpen their skills without risking a full extraction run.

New Shell, Revamped Zone, and a Social Space

A new playable shell named Bishop is also on the way. IGN describes Bishop as a high-performance robot samurai built around speed, surprise, and bursts of melee damage, fitting the role of a fast surgical hunter-killer. On the map side, the existing Perimeter zone is set for a major visual overhaul featuring a fungus infection that will reshape the area, open new routes, and give it a stronger identity relative to Marathon’s other zones. An entirely new zone is also planned for March.

Perhaps the most-requested addition is a social hub. Insider Gaming confirms the hub will arrive as a CyAc-sponsored social space complete with a firing range, giving players a place to meet, test weapons and abilities, and get familiar with their shells before heading into a run. That feature is also targeting a March release window.

March as a Defining Moment

The concentration of major additions around March has not gone unnoticed. GameSpot argues that the month could prove to be a make-or-break moment for Marathon, with the new zone, social hub, and continued mode expansions all converging at roughly the same time. Bungie has also moved away from a strict seasonal schedule in favor of larger, less frequent updates, which means the Symbiosis drop and what follows will carry considerable weight for the game’s momentum and player retention.
