Where to buy
RoboCop: Rogue City is a 2023 first-person shooter with light action-RPG elements developed by Teyon and published by Nacon. Serving as a passionate love letter to Paul Verhoeven’s iconic 1987 sci-fi action film, the game perfectly captures the satirical, hyper-violent, and distinctly dystopian tone of the original movie franchise.
The game features an original storyline set between the events of the films RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3. The city of Old Detroit is spiraling into absolute chaos as a mysterious new crime lord known only as “The New Guy in Town” arrives, triggering a massive turf war among the local street gangs who want to join his ranks. Most notably, legendary actor Peter Weller reprises his role, providing both the voice and the likeness for Alex Murphy/RoboCop. Partnered with the fiercely loyal Officer Anne Lewis, RoboCop must hit the neon-lit, rain-slicked streets to dismantle the syndicates, uncover corrupt corporate conspiracies within Omni Consumer Products (OCP), and grapple with his own lingering human memories.
Gameplay
Rather than trying to force RoboCop into the mold of a fast-paced, modern, wall-running shooter, Rogue City brilliantly forces the player to adapt to its protagonist. RoboCop is a walking tank; he cannot sprint, he cannot slide, and he cannot take traditional cover.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- The Unstoppable Tank: Combat is slow, methodical, and heavily relies on RoboCop’s incredibly thick armor. Players slowly march into rooms full of heavily armed thugs, absorbing gunfire that bounces off their titanium chassis while precisely picking off targets. When enemies get too close, RoboCop can grab them by the throat and hurl them across the room.
- The Auto 9 & PCB Boards: RoboCop’s primary weapon is the iconic Auto 9 burst-fire pistol, which features infinite ammunition. The game features a surprisingly deep, puzzle-like upgrade system where players find Omni Board circuits and must slot in directional computer chips to increase damage, armor-piercing capabilities, and magazine size while carefully routing power to avoid penalty nodes.
- Police Work & RPG Elements: You aren’t just an executioner; you are a cop. Between massive firefights, the game slows down to allow players to freely explore small hub areas of Old Detroit. You can issue parking tickets, fine citizens for public drinking, scan crime scenes for clues using RoboCop’s thermal and analytical vision, and help fellow officers at the precinct.
- Skill Tree: By earning experience points (from combat or completing police duties), players can upgrade several skill branches, including Armor, Vitality, Combat, Engineering (for cracking safes), and Psychology (which opens up new dialogue options to peacefully resolve civilian disputes).
- Cinematic Violence: The combat is incredibly visceral, staying 100% true to the bloody, over-the-top gore of the 1987 film. Players can shoot through walls, blow off limbs, and utilize explosive environmental hazards (like throwing a heavy motorcycle or an explosive barrel at a group of punks).
Development and Legacy
Following the surprising cult success of their previous movie-tie-in game, Terminator: Resistance, Polish developer Teyon cemented their reputation as the masters of mid-budget (“AA”) ’80s action movie adaptations. Built using Unreal Engine 5, the game features stunningly detailed environments, particularly the grimy alleys of Old Detroit and the sterile, corporate halls of OCP.
Released in November 2023, RoboCop: Rogue City was a massive hit with fans of the franchise. While some mainstream critics pointed out that the game suffered from occasional rough edges, stiff facial animations on NPCs, and minor pacing issues, the actual combat and the sheer authenticity of the experience were universally praised. Teyon successfully translated the heavy, weighty fantasy of being RoboCop into an interactive format, complete with the franchise’s signature dark humor and anti-corporate satire.
The game was successful enough to warrant a standalone expansion titled RoboCop: Rogue City – Unfinished Business, which was released later in the summer of 2025, further fleshing out the game’s gritty underworld.
