Portal 2 is a 2011 first-person puzzle-platformer video game developed and published by Valve Corporation. Gameplay
Portal 2 retains the core mechanics of its predecessor: using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device to shoot interconnected blue and orange portals to traverse space and manipulate momentum. However, the game dramatically expands its puzzle vocabulary by introducing several new physics-based elements.
Key gameplay mechanics include:
- Mobility Gels: Discovered in the deep, retro testing areas, players can use portals to paint the environment with different gels. The blue Repulsion Gel allows for massive, bouncing jumps, the orange Propulsion Gel dramatically increases running speed, and the white Conversion Gel allows portals to be placed on any surface it touches.
- Hard Light Bridges and Excursion Funnels: Players use portals to redirect semi-solid bridges of light to walk across gaps or block turret fire, and redirect anti-gravity funnels to slowly float themselves or objects across vast distances.
- Thermal Discouragement Beams: Lasers that must be redirected using specialized redirection cubes to power receptacles and open doors.
- Cooperative Campaign: Portal 2 introduced a massive, entirely separate cooperative campaign featuring its own unique story. Two players control the androids ATLAS and P-body, requiring intense communication and the use of four interconnected portals to solve incredibly complex, multi-stage test chambers.
Development and Legacy
Following the unexpected, massive success of the original Portal, Valve committed to making a full-scale sequel. During development, the team initially experimented with a prequel concept that didn’t include portals or GLaDOS at all, utilizing a different mechanic called “F-Stop.” However, playtesters demanded the return of portals and GLaDOS, prompting Valve to return to the core elements that made the original so beloved.
Valve brought back writer Erik Wolpaw and hired Jay Pinkerton (formerly of National Lampoon) and Chet Faliszek to craft the game’s expansive narrative. They introduced new characters that instantly became iconic: Wheatley, voiced with frantic energy by British comedian Stephen Merchant, and Cave Johnson, the bombastic, reckless founder of Aperture Science, voiced by J.K. Simmons. Ellen McLain also returned to provide the chillingly polite voice of GLaDOS.
Portal 2 was released on April 18, 2011, to universal critical acclaim. Reviewers praised its expanding mechanics, which remained challenging without becoming frustrating, and its exceptional writing, which balanced dark corporate satire with genuine emotional beats. The game won numerous Game of the Year awards and is often lauded for its perfect execution of both single-player pacing and cooperative puzzle design.
